예술가의 의도가 예술작품의 해석에 얼마나, 어떠한 영향을 미칠 수 있는지에 대한 문제는 분석 미학의 오랜 퍼즐들 중 하나이다. 이에 대한 철학적 답변들을 포괄적으로 의도주의와 비의도주의로 구분할 수 있다. 의도주의자들은 예술작품의 해석이 원칙적으로 의도의 발견을 추구해야 한다고 주장하는 반면, 비의도주의자들은 예술작품의 해석이 작가가 실제로 무엇을 의도했는지가 아니라, 그 작품에 공적으로 실현된 의미가 무엇인지를 발견하는 작업이라고 주장한다. 의도주의-비의 도주의 논쟁은 초기에 양자를 보다 강하게 배격하는 입장으로 구성되었으나, 최근에는 서로의 동기가 되는 직관과 해석적 관행들을 정합적으로 수용하는 방향으로 보완된 입장들이 제안되고 있다. 가설의도주의와 온건한 의도주의는 각각 비의도주의와 의도주의의 해석적 이상을 유지하면서도 전통적 입장이 범했던 오류들을 해소하고 상대 이론의 동기가 되는 직관과 관행을 수용하는 방향으로 구성된 입장들이다. 본고는 이 두 입장 중 가설의도주의가 예술작품의 의미와 해석의 본성에 대하여 (하나의) 설득력 있는 해명을 제공해줄 수 있다는 점을 밝히고자 기획되었다. 이를 위하여 필자는 먼저 가설의도주의의 위상을 명확히 밝힐 수 있도록 의도주의-비의도주의 논쟁의 구도를 정리하고, 레빈슨에 의해 제안된 가설의도주의 해석 모델을 가치최대화 이론과의 연관 내에서 보완하여, 예술작품의 의미와 해석의 본성을 보다 잘 설명해줄 수 있는 발전된 해석 모델을 제시할 것이다.

There has been a long controversy on the relevance between artists’ intentions and interpretations of artworks among analytic aestheticians. Intentionalists insist that interpretations of artworks should seek to discov-er actual artistic intentions of their creators in principle, while non-in-tentionalists regard the artistic interpretations as tasks to find out publicly realized meanings in the artworks, not what is actually intended. In the beginning of this debate between intentionalists and non-in-tentionalists, their positions were constructed in a way of strongly rejecting each other, but the ones recently suggested, such as hypothetical in-tentionalism and moderate intentionalism, seem to embrace the pre-theoret-ical intuitions and the interpretive practices that motivate their opponents. In this paper, I argue that the hypothetical intentionalism can provide more coherent and persuasive explain on the nature of artistic inter-pretations than its competing theories. For this purpose, I first (1) elucidate the primary point of hypothetical intentionalism by reorganizing the struc-ture of this long debate between intentionalists and non-intentionalists, and (2) compensate the interpretive model of hypothetical intentionalism by considering value-maximizing theory, then (3) suggest more sophisticated and developed interpretive model which is expected to provide us with a better explain on the nature of artistic interpretation.
