예술작품의 의미 해석 문제와 관련하여 분석미학에서 중심 위치를 차지하는 것은 ‘의도주의와 반의도주의 논쟁’이다. 양측은 ‘예술작품의 의미는 작가의 의도와 동일한가?’라는 질문에 대해 대립적인 입장을 보이는데, 의도주의에 따르면, 예술작품의 의미는 작가의 의도와 동일하며, 작품을 해석할 때 우리는 작가의 의도를 고려해야 한다. 반면 반의도주의에 따르면 작품의 의미는 언어의 공적인 요소에 의해 결정되며, 작가의 의도는 작품의 의미 결정에 무관하다. 이 논쟁은 굉장히 복잡하게 진행되어 왔고, 특히 각자의 주장이 한정된 전제 하에서만 타당해지는 경우에도 상대에게 그 전제를 설득하지 않고 논의를 강행하면서 해결이 나지 않을 듯이 계속되고 있다. 따라서 필자는 각 진영에서 전제되고 있는 ‘의도’ 개념을 드러내고, 그것이 좋은 해석 이론의 구성에 도움이 되는지 살펴보아야 한다고 생각한다. 이에 필자는 의도주의와 반의도주의 논쟁을 그 안에서 전제되고 있는 상이한 의도 개념들을 밝히면서 재구성한다. 반의도주의가 의도주의에 던지는 두 공격을 의도의 ‘인식론적 문제’와 ‘무관련성 문제’로 정리할 수 있는데, 필자는 전자가 데카르트적 심성 개념을 전제하고 있음을 밝히고, 의도주의가 대안적 의도 개념을 이용한다면 그 문제가 해결될 수 있을지 고찰한다. 후자에 대해 필자는 반의도주의가 실재론적 의도 개념을 전제함을 밝히고, 의도주의가 반실재론을 도입하면 그 문제를 피할 수 있을지 고찰한다. 이후 인식론적 문제에 관해서는 의도주의가 우세하나 무관련성 문제와 관련해서는 아직 어느 쪽도 우세가 아니라고 평가하고, 이 논쟁의 해결을 위해 주목해야 할 격전지가 어느 곳인지 진단한다.

One of the central topics in analytic aesthetics regarding interpretations of artworks is the debate between intentionalism and anti-intentionalism. The two sides are in conflict concerning the question of whether the meaning of an artwork is identical with the author’s intention. Intentionalists argue that it is, while anti-intentionalists deny it. The debate has been evolved to a complex situation where any resolution seems out of sight, due to the fact that both are reluctant to discuss their fundamental assumptions about ‘intention’, while their arguments are valid only with the assumptions of their own. Given this, I find it necessary to disclose different notions of intention in each side and discuss which will lead to a better theory of interpretation. With this aim in mind, I begin by re-formulating the debate as centered on two problems raised by an-ti-intentionalists. Concerning the ‘epistemological problem’, I show that the problem only works within the Cartesian notion of intention and exam-ine whether intentionalists can solve it by adopting alternative notions. Concerning the ‘irrelevance problem’, I show that the problem is depend-ent upon the realist notion of intention and examine whether intentionalists can avoid it by using the anti-realist notion. Finally, I argue that in-tentionalists can defeat anti-intentionalists regarding the first problem, while the debate is almost at a dead-end regarding the second, which then leads to my analysis on what should be examined further to achieve a breakthrough.
