As the advertising medium of consumer products, a popular poster design of the very simple and concise shape was in fashion in Germany of the early 20th century. This is a new-type poster called ‘Sachplakat’, which is also known as 'object poster' or 'product poster' to us. Sachplakat showed a unique formative style different from popular posters at that time, and it led to the characteristic poster-shaping movement in the German society.
Lucian Bernhard first introduced the progressive style of Sachplakat, and young German designers, like Hans Rudi Erdt, Ludwig Hohlwein and Julius Gipkens, joined in manufacturing this new poster. Although their posters have different personal styles, they usually have the simple and clear shape and composition, vivid color as well as descriptive but compressive depiction in common when it comes to sending a message. In particular, it is notable that Bernhard established the Sachplakat design style, which has noticeably strong visual impacts, and consistently adhered to the style by limiting the image to objects to be advertised and not using typography, other than the brand name of a product. The poster styles of Sachplakat designers, including Bernhard, have had a tremendous impact on the modern posters and they are still valid today.
Sachplakat intentionally excluded the decorative feature or literary symbolism of Art Nouveau. Reducing explanatory factors and decorative feature and aiming at a simple and concise shape was one of the prevailing phenomena which was noticeable in the graphic design of the first half of the 20th century since the appearance of Sachplakat design style. However, unlike abstract formative experiments of the De Stijl group or the Bauhaus, Sachplakat strongly shows a practicable nature to convey the message in a clear and instant manner with the help of the simple and descriptive image. As is often pointed out, the origin of the Sachplakat design style can be found in the posters of Toulouse-Lautrec and The Beggarstaffs. However, the way of naturally conveying a message through daily reality reflecting the social climate of the time and a friendly image can also be deemed the characteristics of strongly calling attention to poster styles of American designers, including Edward Penfield, of the end of the 19th century.
