30년 이내 우리나라 인구의 절반은 노인으로 구성될 것이다. 노령사회로 빠르게 진입하고 있는 현 상황에서 노인문제에 관심이 집중되고 있다. 노화에 따른 신체기능 저하, 높은 만성 질환 유병율과 그에 따른 다중약물복용 등으로 인하여 노인은 약물오용의 위험에 노출되어 있다. 약물오용은 교육을 통한 약물지식의 습득이 선행될 때 감소시킬 수 있으므로 노인의 특성을 고려한 약물교육의 개발, 적용이 필요하다. 하지만 현재까지 노인을 대상으로 한 약물교육은 서면설명서를 주로 활용해왔다. 노화는 약물요법 리터러시를 저하시키는 바 본 연구에서는 언어가 아닌 단순화된 상징으로 구성되어 대상자의 리터러시 수준에 상관없이 의미의 전달이 용이한 픽토그램을 노인의 약물교육에 활용할 수 있는 방안에 대해 검토하였다. 그 결과 시각자료를 활용할 경우 노인의 약물교육 효과가 향상되는 것을 확인할 수 있었고, 특히 노인이 현재 복용하고 있는 약물을 파악한 후 흑백대비, 큰 글자크기를 활용한 교육 자료와 함께 약물교육이 이루어진 경우 보다 효과적임을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 노인이 자신의 약물과 그 복용방법에 대해 더 잘 이해하고 약물요법을 제대로 이행하여 건강을 유지, 증진하는데 픽토그램의 활용은 상당히 효과적일 것으로 예상되는바 향후 픽토그램으로 구성된 교육 자료와 의료진의 구두교육이 통합된 약물교육의 개발 및 적용을 제안하는 바이다.
Within 30 years, half of our population will consist of older adults. There is a growing interest in the elderly problem in the current situation, which is rapidly entering the aging society. Elders are exposed to the risk of drug abuse such as deterioration of physical function due to aging, high prevalence rate of chronic diseases, and accordingly, multiple drug use. Drug abuse can be reduced when the learning of drug knowledge through education is preceded. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and apply medication education considering the health-related characteristics of the elderly. However, until recent, health care professionals have educated the elderly on medication mainly using written materials. This study investigated the utilization of pictograms as an alternative for elderly medication education. Pictograms are known to be able to convey meaning to the general public regardless of literacy level. Actually, it has been widely used in the public sector because pictograms are composed of simplified symbols; are not language; can be easily conveyed meanings. As a result of examining the effectiveness of pictogram in the elderly education, it was confirmed that medication education using visualized materials was more effective to reduce drug misuse and to improve medication knowledge and compliance. The effect were more increased integrating pictograms with oral instruction by health professionals. Therefore, the use of pictograms is expected to be effective for the elderly to better understand their medicine and how to use it appropriate. I suggest the development and application of pictogram-integrated medication education for elders.
