조선 후기 유학자인 이형상(李衡祥)의 저서 중에 《자학(字學)》이 있다. 이 말미 부분에는 일본 문자에 대하여 언급한 ‘왜언’이라는 제목의 장(章)이 있다. 본고에서는 ‘왜언’이 다룬 가나의 자형·발음의 특징에 대하여 정리하고 기술 내용을 소개했다. ‘왜언’에서는 가타카나가 이로하 순으로 배열되어 있고 그 자수는 46자(エ가 누락)이며 게다가 그 뒤에 ‘御·申·內·候·ン’ 5자가 있어서 모두 합쳐서 51자이다. 가타카나 자형은 현행과 다른 옛 글자이며 ‘ヰ·オ’에는 전혀 다른 글자가 나타난다. 각 문자에는 한글로 발음이 표기되어 있는데 일부 글자에는 본래 발음과는 달리 アウ형 장음, エウ형 요장음, サ행과 ハ행 탁음 등 음변화가 일어난 발음도 적혀있다. 그리고 어떤 경우에 음변화가 일어나는지에 대한 기술도 많이 보인다. ‘왜언’은 조선 지식인에 의한 조선에서의 일본 문자의 수용, 또는 일본 근세의 문자의 양상에 대하여 다양한 시사를 주는 매우 귀중한 기록이다. 그러나 이‘왜언’은 가타카나만 기록되어 있으며 그 음변화에 대해서도 ヨ요음이나 촉음에 대한 기술이 누락되어 있는 등 기록이 충분하지 않고 오류도 많이 있다. 이형상의 일본 가나문자에 대한 흥미는 어디까지나 박물학적인 흥미의 범주를 벗어나지 않는다고 생각된다.

“The Study of Characters” is one of books written by Lee Hyeong-sang, a Confucian scholar in the late Joseon Dynasty. Near the end of this book, there is a chapter titled ‘Wae-eon (Japanese Letters)’, which refers to Japanese letters. In this article, I summarized the character form and pronunciation characteristics in ‘Wae-eon’ and introduced the contents of the description. In ‘Wae-eon’, Katakana is arranged in iroha order. The number of Katakana is 46 (‘エ’ is lacked), but following it characters ‘御 ’, ‘申 ’, ‘內 ’, ‘候’, ‘ン’ appear, so the numbers of japanese characters in ‘Wae-eon’ are 51. The Katakana's shapes are old and different from current Katakana, and totally different characters are used as ‘ヰ’ and ‘オ’. Each letter has a Hangul which denote its original pronunciation, and some letters have second pronunciation too. Second pronunciation appears when pronunciation of kana changes in some cases -- アウ-type long vowels (-au), エウ -type palatalized long vowels (-eu), voicing, and so on. Moreover there are many descriptions about when sound changes occur. ‘Wae-eon’ is an invaluable record by Korean intellectuals, which gives various suggestions about the acceptance of Japanese characters in Joseon, or aspects of Japanese characters in Edo dinasty. But here are recorded only Katakana, no Hiragana. And explanations about sound change have many mistakes and insufficiency, such as the lack of description for palatalized short vowels and geminated consonants. In conclusion, Lee Hyeong-sang's interest in the Japanese letters would be nothing more than curiosity.
