Amy Yamada(1959∼) has wrote many romance novels including her debut work “Bedtime Eyes”(1985), while also known as a writer of “youth novel” whose main character is a teenager. “Fuso no Kyositsu”(1988) which is discussed in this study is also one of her youth novels. In this work, a girl of fifth grade elementary school called “An Motomiya” suffers from collective violence in the classroom. I focused on the processes of experiences of An, the heroine, and examined the recognition of the female image and sexuality required by the writer Amy Yamada.
As a result of considering the work, I have found out that Yamada’s recognition of female image is clearly manifested in “fetishism”, “menstruation” and then “love”. Fetishism was first portrayed when a heterosexual relationship was dominated by the female. The inimitable biological processes of women were also celebrated, menstruation among them. Lastly, relationship was defined more than just desire but more on mutual understanding and responsibility.
“Fuso no Kyositsu” has been mentioned mainly with criticism of collectivism in Japanese society or internal growth of the main character. In this paper, unlike previous studies so far, I considered the recognition of Amy Yamada’s female figure and sexuality and clarified them. It seems that there is a significance in literary research about Amy Yamada’s works.
