소세키 문학은 『소레카라』 부터 『고코로』 까지 공포가 일관해서 나타난다. 본고는 이 공포의 의미를 밝히기 위해 『소레카라』, 『문』, 『히간스기마데』, 『행인』, 그리고 『고코로』에 나타난 공포를 분석한 것이다. 많은 정신의학자는 소세키가 신경증이나 우울증에 걸려 있었다고 한다. 그러므로 이와 같은 공포는 그의 정신장애에서 나타난 것으로 볼 수도 있다. 그러나 이들 공포는 모두 양심의 가책에서 나오는 것이며 주인공의 운명과 관련된 것으로 묘사되어 있다. 그리고 이와 같은 공포는 “고코로”에서 주인공의 죽음과 동시에 사라진다. 마치 죄인은 죽어야 될 운명에 있었던 것처럼 주인공은 양심의 가책에 괴로워하고 자신을 책망한 끝에 죽음을 선택한다. 그러므로 이들 공포는 소세키의 병으로 인한 증상의 나타남이 아니라, 소세키가 죄에 대한 대가가 죽음이라는 운명인 것을 공포를 통해 표현한 것으로 볼 수 있다.

There appears fear in the literatures of Soseki Natume, Sorekara, Mon, Higansugimade, Kojin, and Kokoro. But after Kokoro this fear emotion stops in the literatures of Soseki. Many psychopathists say that Soseki was neurosis or melancholia. So we can guess that the feeling of fear in the literatures of Soseki is the symptoms of his neurosis or melancholia. But how can we solve the problem that the fear emotion stops after Kokoro with the end of death of hero. We can say that the feeling of fear in the literature of Soseki is not the appearance of symptoms of his mental disorders, but the sentiment which was controlled by the consciousness in the mind of Soseki. Namely Soseki expressed his feeling of sin as fear and he desclive the fate of sin through the suicide in Kokoro.
