청계천 전태일다리 위에 서 있는 흉상과 어린이를 위한 여러 위인전을 보면 전태일에 대한 기억이 기억 투쟁의 단계를 지나 공식적으로 확립된 사실을 알 수 있다. 영화 <아름다운 청년 전태일>은 전태일에 대한 다양한 문화적 재현 중에서 가장 두드러졌으며, 전태일을 진정성의 표상으로 만드는 데 크게 기여했다. 오늘날 한국 사회에서 헤게모니를 장악한 전태일 담론은 진정성으로 대표되는 담론이다. 진정성 담론은 전태일의 대중화에 유리하게 작용했지만, 재현을 획일화하고 그의 다양한 면모를 가리는 문제를 낳기도 한다. 그러므로 헤게모니 담론이 형성된 후에도 새로운 관점의 대항 기억과 재현은 계속 이어져야 한다. 그런데 더 큰 문제는 진정성 담론 자체의 역설적 효과에 있다. 진정성은 사실상 텅 빈 기표에 가깝지만 오로지 타자가 평가하는 가치라는 점에서 이데올로기적 도구로 이용되기 쉽다. 강자에게는 책임 회피의 방패 역할을 하며 약자에게는 증명해야 할 자격 조건으로 강요된다. ‘아름다운 청년’의 진정성이 헤게모니 담론이 된 후, 노동운동가로서 전태일의 대의는 잊히고 ‘진정성의 증명’만이 과제로 남았다.

Looking at the bust sculpture of Chun Tae-il on the bridge after his name in Cheonggye Stream and various kinds of his biographies for children, we can see that the official memory of him has been established after the long struggle of memories. Among the various cultural representations of Chun Tae-il, the film < Single Spark(The Beautiful Young man Chun Tae-il) > contributed greatly to making him a symbol of authenticity. Today, the hegemonic discourse about Chun Tae-il is represented by authenticity. Although the authenticity discourse contributed to the popularization of Chun Tae-il, it standardized representations and didn’t show various aspects of him. Therefore the memories and representations against the hegemonic discourse should be raised constantly by diverse and new viewpoints. But serious problems come from the authenticity discourse itself. Authenticity is virtually an empty signifier, but it is easy to use as an ideological tool in that it is ethics only evaluated by others. It serves as a shield for the strong to avoid responsibility and is constantly constrained to the weak as a qualification to be proved. After authenticity of ‘a beautiful young man’ became hegemonic, the spirit of Chun Tae-il as a labor activist was disappeared and ‘the order to prove authenticity’ only remained.
