본고는 일본어와 한국어의 물고기 관련 속담을 대상으로 속담 속에 담겨진 뜻과 유래에 대해서 살펴본 것이다. 물고기는 섬나라인 일본과 국토의 삼면이 바다에 둘러싸인 한국 사람들에게 중요한 음식의 하나이다. 따라서 식생활 속에서 아주 가까운 존재인 물고기가 속담 속에서 어떤 식으로 다루어졌는지 주목하였다. 그 결과 한국어에서 물고기를 포함하는 속담이 일본어에서는 전혀 다른 표현으로 존재한다. 마찬가지로 일본어에서 물고기를 포함하는 속담이 한국어에서 전혀 다른 표현이 보였다. 아울러 한국어와 일본어에서 속담에 등장하는 물고기가 전혀 다른 것이 확인되었다. 일본어에서는 특히 도미, 잉어, 멸치가 보이고 한국어에서는 망등이, 조기, 명태, 북어가 쓰였는데 이들 물고기가 속담에 등장한다는 것은 옛날부터 양국간에서 흔히 먹었다고 생각된다. 아울러 사람들과 이들 물고기의 관계가 오래된 것이 말할 수 있다. 한국어 속담 속에서 물고리란 우유부단, 욕심, 시치미떼는 것, 과대황장, 분수를 모름, 허풍을 떪, 추하고 어리석음을 상징하여 그것을 경계, 자제하는 교훈이 담겨져 있다. 한국어에서 여러 속담에 나타나는 망등이라는 물고기는 긴 거리를 지속적으로 헤엄치지 못 하고 짧은 거리를 조금씩 헤엄치면서 이동한다는 낮은 운동 능력을 속담 속에서 망등이 ＝ 어리석음, 게으름뱅이라는 뜻으로 쓰인 것으로 보인다. 한편 일본어 속담 속에서 물고기란 행운, 감사, 유호관계, 출세 등 상징으로 도미, 잉어, 멸치가 쓰였다. 멸치는 일본인들 평상시에 늘 먹던 물고기라 늘 식사할 수 있는 것에 대한 감사의 뜻을 속담 속에서 쓰인 것으로 보인다. 그리고 도미와 잉어의 화려한 색깔과 돋보이는 모습으로 인해 재수 좋은 고급어로서 옛날부터 일본인들에게 사랑을 받았기 때문에 속담 속에서 행운을 상징하는 물고기로 쓰인 것으로 보인다. 이와 같이 속담 비교를 통해서 추측되는 사람들의 의식과 가치관의 공통성을 이해하는 것은 일본과 한국의 상호 이해에도 연결될 것으로 생각된다.

This paper researched meanings and origin of proverbs related with fish in Korean and Japanese. Fish are the important food for Japanese people and Korean people surrounded by water on three sides of territory. Therefore this paper took note ways dealing with fish which is the ubiquitous thing of dietary life in proverbs. As a result, expressions of proverbs containing fish in Korean were different from Japanese proverbs. Likewise expressions of proverbs containing fish in Japanese were different from Korean proverbs. In addition, kind of fish in Korean proverbs are not same with in Japanese at all. While snapper, carp, and anchovy are often showed in Japanese proverbs, goby, croaker, pollack and dried pollack are often showed in Korean. These kind of fish have been eaten by people of both countries long time ago. So, relation between these kind fish and people might be old. In Korean proverbs, fish symbolized indecision, desire, feigning ignorance, delusion of grandeur, failing to know oneself, bulling, ugliness, and stupidity. These proverbs contain lessons to guard them. Goby showed in several Korean proverbs have low capacity for locomotion not consistently moving long distance but gradually moving short distance. So in proverbs, goby might indicated meaning stupidity and lazybones. Meanwhile, fish such as snapper, carp, anchovy in Japanese proverbs symbolized luck, gratitude, friendly relations and success. Anchovy ordinary eaten by Japanese people could have had gratitude, because of being able to eat in daily life. And snapper and carp might have luck because Japanese people have loved these kind fish due to their gay colors and brilliant appearances, they considered these fish as lucky and rare things. To understand consciousness and values of people through comparison of proverbs can be connected mutual understanding between Japan and Korean.
