텔레비전드라마에서 역사는 시청자의 흥미를 높이고 현재를 반성적으로 돌아보게 하기 위해 선택되는 소재다. 이 논문은 텔레비전드라마 ＜시카고 타자기＞의 일제 강점기 재현을 역사 다시 쓰기로 보고, 현재의 문제적 상황이 무엇이고 그 대안으로써 과거가 어떻게 호출되는지 그 의의는 무엇인지 살펴본 글이다. ＜시카고 타자기＞는 일제 강점기를 전생으로 그리고, 주인공을 소설가로 설정하여 복원된 과거의 기억을 소설로 다시 쓰는 특이점이 있는 작품이다. 작품 속 현재는 모든 가치가 전도된 부조리한 시대다. 과거를 망각하거나 왜곡해서 인식한 인물들로 인해 수많은 문제가 발생하고, 선한 인물들은 아무 잘못 없이 고통을 받고 있는 상태다. 이러한 최소한의 인과응보마저 이뤄지지 않는 문제적 현실의 대안으로써 일제 강점기가 소환된다. 일제 강점기 전생의 기억은 체험을 통해 현재화되고, 이는 다시 언어로 표현됨으로써 역사로 자리매김한다. 또한 소설이 여러 인물들의 협업으로 완성되는 과정을 그림으로써 우리 모두가 역사적 주체임을 암시한다. 이렇게 다시 쓰인 역사는 과거와 현재의 그들과 나를 우리로 연대시키고, 진정성 있는 삶의 가치를 강조한다. 결국 ＜시카고 타자기＞는 역사 다시 쓰기를 통해 잃어버린 가치를 회복할 수 있고 그럼으로써 문제적 현실 또한 극복할 수 있다는 메시지를 던지는 작품이라고 할 수 있다.

In television dramas, history is selected as a material to increase the interest of viewers and make them reflect on the present in a reflective manner. This study set out to examine the significance of rewriting history in a television drama series The Chicago Typewriter based on the assumption that the reproduction of the Japanese rule was part of rewriting history. The Chicago Typewriter tells a story of the protagonist that lived in the Japanese rule in his previous life and lives in the present time as a novelist, presenting a singular point of the novelist writing a novel based on his restored memories. In the drama series, people live in an irrational era with all the values overturned. A lot of problems are caused by people that forget or distort the past, and good people are in pain without any wrongdoing. The Japanese rule is summoned as an alternative to the problematic reality where there is no guarantee even for the least retributive justice. The main character's memories of his previous life during the Japanese rule become present events via experiences and then are expressed in language, thus being established as part of history. The drama also presents a process of a novel being completed through the collaboration of many different figures, thus implying that all people are the historical subjects. This rewritten history united me and others between the past and the present and puts an emphasis on the value of authentic life. In the end, The Chicago Typewriter sends a message that people can restore their lost values and thus overcome the problematic reality through rewriting history.
