본고는 조선시대의 열녀전과 여성 유서에 투영된 욕망의 성격을 구체적으로 파악하고 그 차이를 명확히 드러내어 그것이 함의하는 의미가 무엇인지 밝히는 데 주된 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 조선시대 열녀전과 여성 유서 자료를 종합 정리한 뒤, 둘 사이에 보이는 죽음에 대한 정서적 반응의 차이를 적극 탐색하여 둘 사이에 존재하는 욕망의 간극과 그 간극이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 천착 하였다. 그 결과 열녀전은 사대부 남성들이 여성들로부터 죽음에 대한 다양한 정서적 반응들을 거세했을 뿐만 아니라 조작과 과장을 통해 타자의 욕망을 적극 투영하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 여성 유서와의 비교를 통해 보다 명확히 확인할 수 있었는데, 자결에 앞서 자신의 속내를 가감 없이 드러낸 여성 유서에서 열녀전에서 거세한 여성상이 발견되었기 때문이다. 열녀전과 구분되는 여성 유서 속 새로운 여성상의 존재는 조선시대 여성들이 완벽한 열녀였다는 논리를 깨뜨리고 열녀라는 기호의 경직된 의미를 허물어 버린다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 뿐만 아니라 열 윤리의 폭력성을 드러내고 열 윤리의 폭압에서 벗어나 새롭게 거듭나려 한 근대 여성 주체의 탄생을 예비한다는 점에서 더 큰 의미가 있다. 본고에서 열녀전과 여성 유서를 욕망의 관점에서 비교 분석한 궁극적인 이유는 바로 여기에 있다.

This paper mainly aimed at apprehending features of desire reflected in Yeollyeojeon, revealing difference between wills of women and Yeollyeojeon and showing contained meaning of the difference through reading Yeollyeojeon and wills of women with view of desire. For these purposes, this paper arranged whole materials of Yeollyeojeon and wills of women, positively investigated difference of emotional reaction to death between them and then, intimately studied gap between them and meaning of gap. As a result, this paper determined that Yeollyeojeon not only eliminated various emotional reactions to death from women but also actively projected desire of the other through manufacturing and exaggeration. This paper clearly confirmed those facts with comparing to wills of women, because new existence of women image eliminated in Yeollyeojeon was found in women’s wills showing their own mind prior to suicide. New existence of women image in women’s wills differed from Yeollyeojeon had important meaning that it was to break convention that women in Joseon innately perfect Yeollyeo(virtuous women) and to destroy sticked meaning of sign as Yeollyeo. Also, it was to have more important meaning upon preparing the birth of modern women subject to newly reborn beyond oppression of Yeollyeo ethics. The ultimate reason of that this paper compared and analysed differences between Yeollyeojeon and wills of women in based on view of desire is located at this point.
