<방한림전>은 여성의 성공담을 그린 여성영웅소설이다. 내용상 여타 여성 영웅소설과 큰 차이를 보이지 않는다. 오히려 군담 장면의 약술, 등장인물 간의 갈등이 약화되어 영웅소설의 특장이 잘 드러나지 않는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그간 많은 연구자들이 <방한림전>에 주목해왔는데 이는 두 여주인공의 욕망과 이를 성취하기 위해 선택한 동성결혼에 있다. 연구자들은 방관주와 영혜빙을 욕망을 실현하기 위한 적극적이고 진취적인 여성들로 보고 이들의 결혼은 억압된 성이 표출된 것으로 이는 조선사회에 대한 도전이라고 읽어낸다. 그러나 문제는 방관주와 영혜빙의 결혼이 동성애에 기초한 것이 아니라는 점이다. 방관주와 영혜빙의 결혼은 부모의 후사를 빛내고자 하는 방관주의 욕망과 남성에게 종속과 규제를 받고 싶지 않았던 영혜빙의 욕망이 동성결혼을 통해 구현된 것으로 실리적인 목적에 의해 선택된 결과라 할 수 있다. 이러한 점은 결혼 후 둘만의 비밀을 공유하고 이를 맹약함으로써 형성된 지기라는 특별한 관계를 통해서도 잘 드러난다. 이들은 서로를 이해해주는 유일한 존재로 진정한 지기가 될 뿐만 아니라 아들 낙성을 입양하여 방씨 가문의 후사를 잇게 함으로써 남성에게만 전유되었던 가문의 계승 문제까지 성취해낸다. 이처럼 <방한림전>은 여타 여성영웅소설과 달리 동성결혼과 지기, 낙성의 입양과 같은 새로운 서사를 등장시켜 두 여주인공의 소망 성취 과정을 대담하게 그려내고 있다. 여기에는 욕망을 성취하고자 하는 여성들의 강인한 열망과 의지는 물론이며, 이를 성취하기 위해 여성 스스로 위험한 선택을 하고 지기라는 특별한 관계를 형성함으로써 여성 간의 협력과 힘으로 소망을 성취할 수 있다는 강한 메시지가 담겨있다. <방한림전>이 위험한 이유가 여기에 있는 것이다.

Banghanlimjeon is a heroine story, a narrative of female success. It is a story about two women: Bang Gwanju, who disguises herself as a man to bring honor to her parents, and Yeong Hyebing, who refuses to live a life subject to men. They marry each other and achieve all the things they aspire to. From the narrative, one can see that Banghanlimjeon is not much different from other heroin novels in terms of the content. It is, in fact, difficult to find outstanding events or content, as war scenes are short and the conflicts among the characters are weak. This leads to a weakening in interest, making some of the features that are distinctive to heroine novels not very effective. Nevertheless, many researchers have paid attention to the story, since the subject matter, same-sex marriage between the two female main characters, is unconventional. However, it should be noted that the marriage of Bang Gwanju and Yeong Hyebing was not based on homosexuality. The marriage was a voluntary decision of both Bang (who wants to succeed and maintain her family and parents’ honor) and Yeong (who aspires to a marriage in which both the husband and wife have an equal relationship); a tendency toward homosexuality is not revealed. Further, after marriage, they become the only ones with whom they share their secrets, and reinvent their relationship as a special friendship. They complement each other and play a substantial role in making their wishes come true. Banghanlimjeon describes the two women’s desires, and the process of carrying out their wishes in a composed manner; however, it also conveys their strong desire and will to break taboo, take a risk, and face a tough challenge, as well as the solidarity of women and the infinite possibility of its strength. This is why Banghanlimjeon, which challenges the male-centered Joseon society, was risky.
