본고에서는 최근 한·일 ‘국어과’ 교육과정, 즉 한국은 ‘2015 교육과정’, 일본은 ‘2009 학습지도요령’에 대해 총론과 교육과정의 개정방향, 각 과목 구성비교 및 내용 구성 등에 대한 비교를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 한·일 양국 ‘국어과’ 공통 교육과정의 공통점을 세 가지로 요약하면. 첫째, 한국과 일본의 교육과정 모두 ‘언어능력’을 강조한 점, 둘째, 국어 과목의 ‘도구교과’ 성격을 강조한 점, 셋째 국어과가 ‘언어문화의 창조와 전승’이라는 것을 강조한 점이다. 한편, 한·일 ‘국어과’ 공통 교육과정의 차이점은 첫째, 한국이 내용 영역을 ‘듣기·말하기’, ‘읽기’, ‘쓰기’, ‘문법’, ‘문학’으로 분류한 데 비해, 일본은 ‘말하는 것·듣는 것’, ‘쓰는 것’, ‘읽는 것’의 세 영역으로 나누고, 여기에 ‘전통적인 언어문화와 국어의 특질에 관한 사항’을 첨가한 점, 둘째, 내용 체계에서 한국은 이들 다섯 영역에 하위 범주별 ‘핵심 개념’과 ‘일반화된 지식’을 바탕으로 ‘학년(군)별’로 각 영역이 추구하는 통합적 기능을 신장하도록 한데 비해, 일본은 ‘지도 사항’과 ‘언어활동’을 각 영역에 모두 제시한 점, 셋째, 한국에 비해 일본이 상대적으로 ‘언어활동’을 중시했다는 점이다.
