본 연구의 목적은 매체적 실험과 미학적 시도들로 다원화된 실험애니메이션의 가치를 이해하는데 도움이 되고자 한다. 연구대상은 독특한 기법으로 독창적인 세계를 구축하고 있는 작가 제이크 프라이드(Jake Fried)의 실험애니메이션들이며 작품 Brain Lapse와 Down Into Nothing 두 편에 포커스를 맞추었다. 본 논문은 예술에 이르는 사고와 경험의 모든 순간과 우연을 만나는 일련의 과정이 창의성의 개념이라고 주장한 존 듀이(John Dewey)의 이론을 바탕으로 제이크 프라이드 작품의 독창적인 프로세스와 실험적 스타일을 분석하고자 한다. 먼저 1장에서는 연구의 배경과 목적 그리고 범위와 방법을 서술하였다. 그리고 2장에서는 존 듀이의 예술론에 입각하여 제이크 프라이드의 작품의 행위와 과정의 미학을 설명하였다. 제이크 프라이드는 드로잉을 반복적으로 스캔하여 과정과 행위가 반영되는 영상을 선보였고 이것은 존 듀이가 언급한 예술 창조 과정의 미적경험이 작품의 핵심요소가 된다. 3장에서는 제이크 프라이드 실험애니메이션의 특징을 다루었다. 1) 패턴과 구조의 멀티플 이미지 2)유기적이고 기하학적인 결합의 리듬과 율동의 두 가지 주제로 제이크 프라이드의 작품 Brain Lapse와 Down Into Nothing에 집중하였다. 제이크 프라이드는 자신의 작품을 멀티플 이미지의 움직이는 그림처럼 제작하였으며 프레임사이에 발생하는 리듬을 통해 보편적인 시각 체험을 넘어서는 다층적인 구조를 형성한다. 실험애니메이션에 나타나는 다양한 표현과 기법의 연구는 회화, 사진과 영상 등의 매체적 경계를 넘어서는 확장되고 열린 개념으로서 실험애니메이션의 미학적 가치를 이해하는 중요한 단초가 될 것이다.

The purpose of this research is to understand the value of contemporary art as it has diversified in through experiments in medium and aesthetics. To do this, we will focus on the unique works of Jake Fried, namely his experimental movies Brain Lapse and Down Into Nothing. This paper is based on the notion that creativity is a process based on thought, experience, and coincidence as taught by John Dewey. With such a pragmatic approach we analyzed the work of Fried, specifically his unique process and experimental style. In chapter 1 we lay out the background, goals and perimeters of this study. In the second chapter we explain the aesthetic process of Fried based on the art theory of John Dewey. Fried is known for overlaying his drawings in a continuous process and action cycle that distills Dewey's experience of the creative art process. In the third chapter we look at the actual work of Jake Fried. 1) multiple imagery of pattern and construct 2) organic yet geometric shapes in movement and rhythm are the two themes we will focus on in his works Brain Lapse and Down Into Nothing. Jake Fried produces his work as multiple images in constant motion creating a rhythm between frames that go beyond the conventional visual experience into a multi-layered one. In-depth study and research into contemporary art and it's diverse methods of expression and style go beyond painting, photography, or video mediums into a larger more expansive conceptual approach. This paper seeks to provide a basis for understanding such aesthetic values in modern art.
