동학ㆍ천도교는 서구적 근대에 대응했던 조선의 근대적 기획이 분명하게 포함된 한반도의 자생적인 종교ㆍ사상체계였다. 따라서 동학ㆍ천도교는 한반도 근대성의 단초를 찾고 이를 정당화하고자 했던 많은 연구들의 핵심 주제가 되었다. 동학ㆍ천도교의 근대성을 평가할 때는 크게 다음과 같은 두 가지 방식에서의 난점이 동반된다. 이를테면 서구적 근대성을 기준에 삼고 그것에 단순 대응하는 내용을 추출하거나, 반대로 서구적 근대에 날선 경계를 설정하고 독자적인 근대의식을 찾으면서 정신사적 자부심을 요청하는 방식이 그것이다. 하지만 이 둘 모두는 동학ㆍ천도교의 사상사적 특성과 의의를 일방 규정해버릴 수 있는 한계를 갖는다. 동학은 동과서의 지리적 구분 속에 있었던 ‘경계의 사유’이자, 조선 후기와 대한제국 시기를 관통하면서 서구적 근대를 추종했지만 결국 좌절될 수밖에 없었던 ‘분열된 식민지적 사유’라는 특성을 갖는다. 이때 이러한 경계의 사유, 분열된 식민지적 사유는 결국 동학ㆍ천도교의 근대성을 드러내주는 그자체라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 핵심은 그러한 조건들 속에서 동학ㆍ천도교는 전통과 구별되는 근대적 기획을 어떻게 구상했는지, 그리고 그러한 근대적 기획 속에서 어떤 내용을 자신의 사유체계 안에 포함시키고자 했는지, 나아가 그것을 어떠한 철학적 용어들로 표현하고 있는지를 파악하는 일이다.

Donghak and Chondogyo were native Korean religion and the thought system that clearly included Joseon’s modern planning in response to Western modernity. However, when assessing the modernity of Donghak and Chondogyo, difficulties may arise from two approaches: (1) taking western modernity as the standard, and identify the content that correspond to it, and (2) setting a clear boundary against western modernity, and calling for spiritual pride, while seeking Korea’s own modern consciousness. Both of them have limitations that they may unilaterally define the ideological characteristics and significance of Donghak and Chondogyo. Donghak is the “thought of boundary” in the geographical distinction between the East and the West, along with “divided colonial thought” which could not but be defeated as it underwent the periods of the late Joseon and the Korean Empire. The thought of boundary and the divided colonial thought are arguably the very thing that reveals the modernity of Donghak and Chondogyo. Therefore, the primary concern is to understand how Donghak and Chondogyo envisioned modern planning in contrast to the tradition in such conditions, what they tried to include in their thought system, and what kind of philosophical terms they used to express it.
