This article explores how the relationship between art(literature) and philosophy is understood by Friedrich von Schlegel, a representative theorist of early German romanticism, through his first philosophical lecture, "Transcendental Philosophy". Schlegel wanted to combine art and philosophy. He found the grounds in the combination of 'Infinite and Consciousness' which means the synthesis of nature and mind. According to him, nature (the infinite), mind (consciousness), art and philosophy all relate to 'formation(Bildung)'. Therefore, 'Symbol and Allegory', two forms of formation, are important concepts. This article attempts to explain the art(literature)-theoretical philosophy or the philosophical art(literature)-theory in early German Romanticism by synthesizing the discussions of the relation between art and philosophy focusing on the concept of 'symbol and allegory'.
