우리는 21세기 급변하는 국제정세 속에서 지리학이 많은 도전 앞에 시련을 견디고 있는 시점에 20주년을 맞이한 한국도시지리학회가 중심이 되어 통일을 준비하고 학문분야로서 지리학의 정체성과 위상을 확고하게 다져할 시점에 이른 것 같다. 그러므로 본 학회 창립 20주년에 즈음하여 지리학적 지식이 인문, 자연 모든 분야에서 활발하게 활용되는 모습을 보는 것은 의미 있는 일이지만 지리학 전반에 걸쳐 문제점을 안고 있다. 도시지리학은 도시구조를 규명하는 데 초점을 맞추는 경향이 있다. 물론 도시지리학은 도시구조론 이외에도 도시화 및 도시체계론을 비롯한 도시입지론, 세계도시론, 도시경제론, 도시생태론, 도시경관론 등의 각론을 포함하고 있지만, 무엇보다 도시구조론과 도시체계론이 중요하다. 가장 중요한 과제는 인류의 문명을 창출한 곳이 도시이므로, 도시지리학은 문명론과 직결될 수 있는 분야라 할 수 있다.

We are in the midst of a rapidly changing international situation in the 21st century. At this time, we are ready to prepare for the unification of Korean peninsula of the 20th anniversary of the Korean Urban Geography Society and firmly establish the identity and position of geography as a field of study. It seems to have reached the point of time when it is done. Therefore, it is meaningful to see the geographical knowledge actively used in all fields of humanity and nature at the 20th anniversary of the founding society, but it has problems in the whole geography. Urban geography tends to focus on identifying urban structures and urban system. Of course, urban geography includes urbanization, urban system theory, global city theory, urban economy theory, urban ecology, urban landscape theory, etc. More important than anything, urban geography is a field that can be directly linked to civilization, since it is the city that created human civilization.
