Mining towns established by the discovery of veins of gold can be declined if the deposits of gold are depleted. The purpose of this study is to review the cases of the successful revitalization of abandoned mining settlements in other countries so as to seek the possible indication to abandoned mining towns in Korea. This study examines the revitalization process of Jiufen, Taiwan and Arrowtown, New Zealand which are settlements with abandoned gold mines. Though the two towns have shown different patterns of population changes, it is common that, for their revitalization, they utilized the historical fact that there were gold mines. They established and utilized the museums which contained artifacts of the past, mostly the gold mine times. In order to survive longer, abandoned mine towns should establish strong ties among residents and business owners in the towns. Voluntary organizational activities of the residents encourage collective intelligence for community development and expand the ties among the residents. Residents and business owners in the communities should work together to organize an association and to implement revitalization process with the support of governmental fund.
