『청춘만장』은 1ㆍ20 학병의 전쟁 수기집이다. 『청춘만장』은 일본 학병수기의 영향 하에 만들어졌다. 일본 학병수기는 ‘영원한 청춘’으로 남은 ‘전몰자’의 기록으로서 흡인력이 있었다. 그에 반해 『청춘만장』은 이제 사회 기득권 세력이 된 엘리트들의 기록이었다. 그들은 당대의 ‘청춘’들에게 자신들의 체험을 들려줌으로써 잃어버린 젊음을 보상 받고자 했다. 한편 『청춘만장』은 ‘65년 체제’의 산물이었다. 한일협정 이후 민족주의적인 분위기의 고양은 이 수기집에도 그대로 반영되어 있다. 태평양전쟁 한국인 전몰자 유골 봉환 문제에 대한 높은 사회적 관심은 학병들을 다시 결집시키는 계기가 되었다. 『청춘만장』은 베트남 전쟁에 대한 정치적 반응이기도 했다. 학병들은 자신들이 참전한 전쟁에 대해서는 모두 염증을 드러냈지만, 베트남 전쟁에 대해서는 다른 목소리를 내는 사람도 있었다. 당연하지만, 『청춘만장』은 전쟁문학으로서의 성격을 띠었다. 학병들은 전쟁을 스펙터클과 이국적 풍경으로 묘사함으로써 전쟁을 신화화했다. 그들은 자연과 전쟁을 대비하고, 그 속에서 남자들끼리의 ‘우정’을 강조했다. 학병들은 전장에서의 체험이 전혀 무의미한 것만은 아니었다고 믿고 싶었다. 독자들도 베트남 전쟁의 ‘의미’를 찾고 싶은 욕망이 있었다. 큰 틀에서 『청춘만장』은 한일협정으로 정권의 정당성이 무너진 박정희 체제의 만회 전략으로서 민족주의 담론 속에 놓여 있었으며, 베트남 전쟁의 출구 전략으로서도 의의가 있다.
