본고는 1970년대 조해일 단편소설을 중심으로 이방인 의식과 문제적인 공간을 탐색한 연구이다. 조해일은 독특한 기교를 구사하면서 문제적인 현실에 주목한 작가로 알려져 있다. 당시 억압적인 정치권력 아래서, 모순된 현실을 직접 비판하기보다는 우회적인 방식으로 구현해 냈다. 그의 작품에 등장하는 서술자는 이방인의 위치에서 불구적인 현실을 탐색해 갔고, 현실과 일정한 거리두기를 실현함으로써 문제적인 공간의 작동원리를 객관화시키는 데 성공했다고 보인다. 작품 속에 이방인은 현실과 거리를 둔 ‘외방객’이면서, 한편 현실 속에 동화되기를 희망하는 인물이다. 이방인의 시선은 산업화 과정에서 파행적으로 조성된 다양한 공간들을 정확하게 읽어내는 반면, 문제를 해결하려는 점에서 미온적인 면이 있다. ‘집’과 ‘방’으로 표상되는 공간은 일상성마저 파괴된 불모적 세계를 보여주었으며, ‘군대’와 ‘학교’는 제도라는 규율로 은밀히 보호 받는 기형적인 권력의 파행성을 감지했다. 또한 ‘길’과 ‘버스’의 공간에서는 자본주의 현실에 편승한 중산층과 배제된 도시빈민의 삶을 대조하면서 현실에 동화되지 않을 수 없는 처참한 삶의 비극성을 보여준다. 또한 ‘바다’와 ‘물’을 중심으로 현실과 유리된 이방인으로서의 자아를 반성적으로 살펴보고, 점차 현실에 눈뜬 인물로 재생하는 것을 보았다. 이상에서 볼 때, 조해일의 우회적인 공간의 탐색은 당시 왜곡된 시대상황을 능동적으로 발견하고자 한 작가의 전략적 기교로 의미가 있다.

This study explored stranger awareness and problematic spaces in the novels of Jo, Hae Il from the 1970s. Jo is known as a writer with a unique style and focus on the problems of reality. Under the suppressive political authority of that time, he took a detour rather than direct criticism of the contradictions. The speakers in his novels were seemingly successful with objectifying the operating principles of problematic spaces by exploring the crippled reality from the position of a stranger and keeping a certain distance from the reality. The strangers in the novels are distant from the reality, but hoping to assimilate with the reality. The views of strangers accurately read various spaces that are adversely derived from the process of industrialization, but are rather passive when it comes to resolving the problems. The spaces of ‘homes’ and ‘rooms’ showed a barren world with no mundane characters and those of ‘military’ and ‘schools’ detected the corruption of abnormal powers that are secretly protected by systems and laws. Also, ‘roads’ and ‘buses’ compared the middle class who rides in the reality of capitalism and the isolated lives of urban poor to show the tragedy of gruesome lives that cannot help but assimilate with the reality. Also, ‘rain’ and ‘sea’ reflectively examined the ego of speakers who are strangers detached from the reality and observed them as they gradually opened their eyes to the reality. Based on this, Jo, Hae Il's detour of the spaces was a strategic technique of the writer who intended to actively explore the distorted reality of his time.
