This study aims to investigate the fundamental structure of Jose Hierro’s literary view of the world in his early poems. Jose Hierro was one of the most outstanding Spanish poets of the mid-twentieth century and won many important prizes including the Premio Cervantes. His first collection of poems Tierra sin nosotros, published in 1947, contains many works based on the tragic worldview. The protagonists of the poems lose the beautiful world just at the moment of experiencing the happiness in that space. On the other hand, another collection of poems published few months later, Alegria, shows the wishes of the protagonists to get over the hostile circumstances presented in Tierra sin nosotros. So the early literary worldview of Jose Hierro can be defined as that of loss and recovery. The following collection, Con las piedras, con el viento... published in 1950, is based on the Hierro’s personal experience of love, but this book also confirms the worldview of loss and recovery in its background. In the decades of the fifties and sixties, when the “poesia social” was in vogue, Hierro’s works maintained a certain distance from this predominant tendency, although the critics preferred to see similarities between one and another poetry. It is desirable to analyze the Hierro’s poetry of that period also in relation to his early literary worldview above observed.
