The DPSIR (driving forces, pressures, states, impacts, responses) model is useful in the selection of indicators for the purpose of evaluating the sustainability of estuary ecosystems. In order to express the information contained in a set of indicators concisely, it is necessary to convert the indicators into a single index. This article examines several methods of converting a set of indicators into a single index. In particular, given that the DPSIR model assumes that driving forces and pressures indicators are important determinants of states and impacts indicators, it is possible to set up a predictive model for states and impacts indicators, from which an index representing an early warning signal can be extracted. To explore the issues arising when applying such methods to real-world data, the methods were applied to Geumgang Estuary, one of the major estuaries in South Korea.
