This study aims to examine, through a comparative analysis, whether there is any difference in the meaning function between the words “그러니까 (geureonikka),” “그니까(geunikka),” “근까(geunkka),” and “그까(geukka)” in the spoken corpus. It aims to clarify whether the change of form leads to a change of meaning, and if so, what exact difference does it bring about. For this purpose, a corpus of about 200,000 words, including dialogues and monologues from public and private domains extracted from the Sejong spoken corpus, was constructed and analyzed.
First, the realization frequency of word forms was found to be as follows: of the total 1,229 cases, 286(23.3%) 그러니까(geureonikka), 360(29.3%) 그니까(geunikka), 326(26.5%) 근까(geunkka), and 257(20.9%) 그까(geukka). Therefore, in terms of the frequency of realization, not only “그러니까 (geureonikka)” but also “그니까(geunikka),” “근까(geunkka),” and “그까 (geukka)” should be treated as important. In addition, when the abbreviation is made, the original meaning of the causal relation is weakened, and the functions of supplementary explanations and speaking connections are strengthened. Therefore, although the abbreviated forms of “그러니까 (geureonikka)” do not lose all original meaning and have totally new meanings, they do perform with extended meanings and functions of discourse sign than the original meaning.
