본 논문은 육유의 기문 중 각기 다른 시기에 거주공간을 소재로 지은 「연정기」, 「서소기」, 「거실기」라는 세 편의 작품을 통해 문인의 거주공간에 대한 인식이 어떻게 변화되었는지를 살펴본 것이다. 육유는 비록 실력과 인품을 갖춘 인물이었지만 정치적으로는 매우 불우하였고 그 때마다 이루 말할 수 없는 경제적 압박으로 제대로 된 거주공간을 마련하지 못했다. 하지만 이를 그저 비관하거나 자포자기하지 만은 않았다. 장년에는 정신적으로 어려움을 극복하고자 집을 ‘연정’이라는 배라고 상상하며 광활한 대자연을 누비는 호연하고 대범한 마음가짐을 드러냈다. 두 차례 파직을 경험한 중년의 육유는 여전히 나라에 대한 걱정이 깊었고 동시에 자신이 정계에 진출하여 뜻을 이루지 못한 것에 대한 자탄과 비분함을 ‘서소’라는 둥지 같은 서재를 통해 노출하였다. 노년에는 이미 4차례 파직을 당하고 더 이상은 정계 진출을 꿈꾸지 않게 되었고 그저 주어진 환경과 조건에 따라 안분자족하며 한가하고 평담한 일상을 ‘거실’이란 손수 지은 집을 통해 표현하였다. 이로서 육유에게 있어 거주공간은 그저 일신을 거하는 처소로서의 역할로 그치는 것이 아니고 자신의 감정과 사상을 이입하여 드러내는 하나의 매개체였다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.
