According to their book Remediation: Understanding New Media by J. David Bolter and Richard A. Grusin, a medium is that which remediates. It is that which appropriates the techniques, forms, and social significance of other media and attempts to rival or refashion them in the name of the real. What is important here is the notion of ‘remediation'. Remediation is the mediation of mediation. Each act of mediation depends on other acts of mediation. Media are continually commenting on, reproducing, and replacing each other, and this process is integral to media. Media need each other in order to function as media at all.
This paper aims to reconsider the relationship between literature and film from the perspective of the 'remediation'. Literature and film, that have become old media now, remediate each other and modify their own unique media characteristics. As a result literature shows cinematic characteristics and film literary characteristics. The german novel 『Das Zimmermadchen』 by Markus Orths and its film adaptation 「The Chambermaid Lynn」 by Ingo Haeb is the good example for the remediated literature and film.
