The purpose of this study is to find out the family relations experiences of the immigrant workers in Korea. They have been separated from their family over a long term of years and understand that the meaning of family relations can be altered experiencing absence of trusts and stabilities through family. This study performs interviews with consented nine immigrant workers with various backgrounds and analyses the qualitative data based on Strauss and Corbin's(1998) grounded theory approach. As a result, we found a hundred concepts, 32 subcategories and 15 categories derived through open, axial and selecting coding. The main phenomena is derived as ‘feeling all alone here’, and the core variable for family relations experiences of the immigrant workers is ‘coping with my lonely life away from home’. On the basis of data, three types of coping with the lonely lives away from home are identified; coping type, adaptation type and devoted type. At last, a circumstantial model relevant to individual, family and community, country is presented, and the interactions of various circumstances that affected the results are presented. This study examines that the immigrant workers find alternatives out of the family relations because of precarious situations and separation, also offers theoretical frame to understand that the immigrant workers are individuals with desire and needs trying to adjust their lives through family relations strategy.
