본 연구는 시각장애인의 읽기의 중요성과 특성에 주목하고, 읽기 향상을 위한 연구적 함의를 얻는 데에 그 목적을 두었다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위하여 본 연구는 40편의 국내 시각장애인 읽기 관련 연구의 동향을 읽기 특성, 교육 프로그램 및 중재, 현황/인식 및 요구로 구성된 가로축과 연구주제, 장애정도, 연구대상, 연구방법으로 구성된 세로축으로 이루어진 분석틀을 기반으로 탐색하였다. 연구 결과 시각장애인의 읽기 관련 연구들은 그 특성과 중재에 관한 연구들이 집중적으로 이루어졌으며, 특히 확대문자나 점자 등 문자적 접근성과 그 특성에 초점을 두고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 전맹과 저시력 시각장애인에 관한 연구가 주류를 이루는 반면 시각중복장애나 중도시각장애인에 관한 연구가 거의 이루어지지 못한 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 주로 시각장애학교에 재학 중인 학생들을 그 대상으로 연구가 이루어져온 반면, 일반학교에 재학 중인 시각장애학생들에 관한 연구는 매우 드물었다. 마지막으로 조사연구 방법이 주된 연구방법으로 사용된 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 이상의 결과들을 바탕으로 그 시사점을 논하고 향후 연구를 위한 제언을 하였다.

Individuals with visual impairments have particular characteristics on reading due to the disabilities. This study has a focus on these characteristics and the importance of reading in one's life. Therefore the purpose of this study is to improve reading ability and the systems for reading education for individuals with visual impairments through exploring the current research status. To achieve this purpose, this study has selected 50 articles published in Korea and analyzed them according to its own analytical frame. The results are as follows: The literature about reading for individuals with visual impairments have been conducted to address the reading characteristics and interventions. Especially they have paid attention to the accessibility to the text(large print/magnifier and braille). Besides, there are few studies about individuals with visual impairments and other disabilities and adventitiously visually impaired. In addition, almost articles selected their subjects in special schools only. Lastly, survey research is found to be the most frequently used methods in articles about reading for individuals with visual impairments. This study discussed the future implications according to the results above.
