이효석의 日本語 長篇小說인 「녹색 탑」은 植民化와 脫植民化 사이의 경계에 선 작가의 (무)의식을 보여주는 작품이다. 「녹색 탑」에는 西歐의 學問이나 文化와 朝鮮의 美가 공존하고 있다. 「녹색 탑」의 混種性은 궁극적으로 제국의 시선을 통해 조선적인 것에 내재한 보편적인 미를 탐색하거나 局地性이 배제된 교양을 체화하는 데 있다. 또한 이 작품은 ‘피와 피’의 結合이라는 내선일체론의 동화논리를 受容하면서도 그것으로부터 벗어나려고 한다. 서구의 ‘현대적’ 교양을 체득한 인물이 ‘조선적인 것’을 發見하고, 그것을 일본식의 ‘국민문학’을 넘어선 ‘세계문학’의 次元에 위치지우려는 이효석 특유의 기획은 서구식의 오리엔탈리즘이나 일본의 國民文學論과 ‘같으면서도 다른’ 模倣의 양상을 보여준다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 국민문학 개념은 당면한 차이를 도외시함으로써 결과적으로는 식민주의에 포섭당할 可能性이 있다.

This thesis looks into the hybrid aspects of Lee, Hyo-seok's novels in the late Japanese Colonial Period, relating with the writer's (un)consciousness who is in the border between colonization and de-colonization. Green Tower and other novels in 1940's deal with the (re)discovery of Chosun's beauty, the love with Japanese woman or Western woman, the realization of Europeanism. These novels think more of the mixed condition West /Japan /Chosun than their's differences, and more of the principle of assimilation than the hierarchy. Western culture and study, Chosun's beauty and value co-exist in Green Tower too. The hybridity of Green Tower discovers and seeks the universal beauty of Chosun through the imperial's eye. Also this novel accepts but intends from the assimilation of Japan and Korea, ‘the combination of blood’. Lee, Hyo-seok's peculiar project was in the discovery of Chosun by a man who had Western-modern culture, and tried to set it on the category of ‘World Literature’. His project shows ‘the same but different’ mimicry in comparison with Orientalism or Japan's National Literature. Nevertheless, His concept about National Literature look away from the difference or gap, finally can be controled by the colonialism. The optimistic view of this novel, which followed the stereotype of love story, didn't have the critical distance about West's Orientalism and Japan's assimilation.
