본고는 ‘불을 켜다’ 구문의 등장 배경에서 시작하여, 이 구문의 ‘불’자리에 들어가는 후보가 환유적으로 확장되면서 ‘켜다’의 용법이 다양하게 발달하는 과정을 추적한 것이다. ‘불을 켜다’는 ‘만들기 동사’들이 그러하듯이 본래 목적어 자리에 와야 할 ‘과정’이나 ‘재료’(부싯돌) 대신 그 ‘결과물’(불)이 목적어 자리에 들어오면서 성립했다. 이후 ‘불’ 자리에는 기능적으로 유사한 ‘초(불)’, ‘등(불)’ 등이 나타날 수 있게 된다. 이처럼 ‘불’ 자리에 ‘조명 기구’들이 들어오자 ‘전기 등’의 등장과 더불어 ‘전등’도 ‘초’, ‘등’과 나란한 자격을 갖게 되었다. 전등이 일반화하면서 ‘불을 켜다’의 첫번째 해석은 ‘전등에 불이 들어오도록 스위치를 누르는 행위, 또는 그 결과’가 되었다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 ‘전등을 켜다’의 ‘전등’ 자리에 ‘라디오’, ‘TV’ 등이 들어갈 수 있게 된다. 이후 TV가 일반화하면서 ‘TV를 켜다’를 중심으로 ‘켜다’는 ‘화면이 있는 전자기기의 화면에 내용이 뜨도록 장치를 작동시키다’라는 해석을 받게 되었다. 이를 바탕으로 ‘뉴스를 켜다’, ‘앱을 켜다’ 등 화면에 내용을 등장하게 하는 행위에도 ‘켜다’가 쓰이게 된 것이다. ‘켜다’의 용법 확장 과정은, 구문을 이루는 구체적 표현 가운데 일부가 특수한 맥락적 의미를 가지고 빈번하게 사용되면서 이를 매개로 해당 구문의 빈자리에 들어갈 수 있는 후보가 늘어나는 과정이다. 이러한 관련 표현들의 연쇄는 전형적인 ‘가족닮음’ 현상이다.

This paper investigates how the construction pwul-lul khye-ta (‘불을 켜다’) has derived, and the candidates in the object slot have extended. Like any creation verbs, pwul-lul khye-ta derived through taking the result of the action the verb denotes comes into the object slot: strictly speaking, the object slot should have been filled with the material, that is, flint. Afterwards, the candidates in the slot of the construction have expended to other lighting apparatuses, like candles, lamps, etc. Since the introduction of electric lighting apparatuses, they easily became the slot’s candidates. Prevailing of electric lighting apparatuses made the most prominent construal of the construction pwul-lul khye-ta became the action of switching a switch to light a lighting apparatus up, or its result. Based on this change, the candidates of the slot expanded so to include a radio, TV, etc. Then TV became every home’s a must-have item. It made another semantic change: using TV-lul khye-ta a lot in everyday conversation made it possible that people construed khye-ta as if its meaning is to switch a switch to show contents in the monitor. This, in turn, made it possible that the candidates of the slot expanded to include ‘news’ or ‘app’, etc. By a member of the construction pwul-lul khye-ta’s prevailing, the expansion of the usages of the verb khye-ta arised. The process is expanding the candidates available in the slot in question. These expansion follows a typical Family Resemblance Phenomenon.
