이 글은 미국 블루밍턴(Bloomington)과 노멀(Normal) 지역에서 운영되고 있는 한글학교의 한국어교육 현황과 특징, 그리고 문제점과 앞으로의 과제를 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 이를 목적을 수행하면서 다음과 같은 내용을 확인할 수 있었다. 현황과 관련해서 총 37명의 학습자가 있으며 학급 수는 5개(유아, 초급 1, 2, 중급, 고급)으로 이루어져 있으며, 학습자는 크게 성인과 학생이며, 혈통 관계를 고려하면 한국인 2세, Half-Koran, 한국인 입양인, 순수 미국인으로 나누어진다. 특히 한국인 입양인과 순수 미국인들이 약 1/3을 차지하는데 이는 다른 지역에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 학습자의 유형이라고 할 수 있으며, 이들을 고려하여 학급의 운영이나 교원의 배치에 있어서 큰 영향이 있다는 점이 특징적이다. 이 한글학교에서는 Book Buddy 활동과 Reward Bucks 제도를 도입한 것 또한 특징적이다. 한국어교육의 문제점으로는 교원 수급과 교원의 전문성 문제, 학습자의 학급 편성의 문제, 수업 유형의 다양성 부족 문제, 다양한 교재, 교구의 부족, 교원 연수의 접근성 부족 등을 들었고, 이를 극복하기 위한 앞으로의 과제에 대해서는 보다 현실적인 대안으로 전문성을 갖춘 유능한 교원을 확보하고, 교원의 자질을 함양하는데 두었다. 이 둘의 구체적인 방안으로 온라인을 통한 한국어교원 자격증 획득, 순회강사의 활용, 교원간의 협의회 운영, 교원 일지 작성 등을 제시하였다.

This article examines the current status, characteristics, problems and future challenges of Korean language education in Korean schools operated in Bloomington and Normal areas of the United States. Problems of Korean language education include problems of teacher supply and demand, problems of teacher’s professionalism, problems of classroom organization of learners, lack of diversity of class types, lack of diverse textbooks, lack of access to teacher training, As for the task, we have set up a more realistic alternative to acquire competent teachers with expertise and cultivate the qualities of teachers. As a concrete method of these two, Korean language teacher certification acquisition through online, utilization of tour instructor, operation of a council between teachers, and writing a teacher’s diaries were suggested.
