『Dosan Ahn, Chang-ho』, the first post-independence biography of Ahn, Chang-ho written by Lee Gwang-soo in 1947, provided Korean society for the first time with the frame of understanding Ahn, Chang-ho and his thoughts. After more than 70 years of the first publication, the book, with continuous editions, is accepted as nearly a classic and still occupies the central place in understanding Ahn, Chang-ho. Given this great influence of the book, a thorough examination into its contents must be made. This thesis presents three problems in Lee, Gwang-soo,s understanding of Ahn, Chang-ho, which are illustrated in 『Dosan Ahn Chang-ho』. The first problem is that Lee, Gwang-soo limited national independence movement leader Ahn, Chang-ho’s activities over wide spectrum within character building in moral terms. The reason why Lee, Gwang-soo did so is that Lee himself wanted to legitimize his nonpolitical character building movement he had started after accepting the Japanese rule. The second is that one cannot see in 『Dosan Ahn Chang-ho』 the national independence movement activities of Ahn, Chang-ho, the leading activist during the Japanese colonial rule. There are no mention of democratic republic building and preparation for an independence war that Ahn emphasized while in Shinmin Society that he established in late Chosun dynasty period. Also, the book rarely mentions the design of independence movement that Ahn presented while leading the Provisional Government after the 3.1 Movement. Instead, it depicts the Provisional Government as if it have been weakened due to its inner factionalism and failed to provide any prospect for the independence. This can also be explained by Lee Gwang-soo’s betrayal of and escape from the Provisional Government. Above all, the revolutionary independence movement of the late 1920s is entirely omitted in 『Dosan Ahn Chang-ho』. Instead, Lee, Gwang-soo indentified himself with Ahn, Chang-ho and Heungsadan, thereby conveyed an incorrect impression to the public that Ahn, Chang-ho was a national-improvementalist or home-rule activist like Lee himself. This has brought a fatal blow to reputation of Ahn, Chang-ho as an leading independence movement activist. The third problem is that Lee, Gwang-soo described as if Ahn, Chang-ho has had a highly negative recognition of Korean people and history, which is far from the truth. Rather, it more reflected what Lee, Gwang-soo had in mind about Korean people and history. Ahn, Chang-ho had a faith in the disposition of Korean people, and did not take a pessimistic view of the future of Korea, despite the present sufferings. It would be inevitable for the author to be influenced by his own view to some extent in describing a certain figure. But in the case of 『Dosan Ahn Chang-ho』, the author’s subjective views and judgement are too much involved. Large part of works that are very important when considered in Ahn’s whole activities are left out. One may try to understand this omittance by considering the difficult surroundings of the time, but even in the part that Lee recorded, exaggeration, understatement, and distortaion are common, which makes readers have difficulty in distinguishing facts on Ahn’s works from what the writer made from his false images. This is why readers need to be equipped with close attention and background knowledges on Korean modern history. Or, they could not avoid the danger of seeing Ahn, Chang-ho created by Lee Gwang-soo who reflected his own position, intention and limitation. Ahn, Chang-ho was one of the leading figures who headed Korean independence movement, in both ideological and practical ways. 『Dosan Ahn Chang-ho』 written by Lee, Gwang-soo, however, is too far from showing this feature. This problem can be attributed to the fact that Lee, who was blamed as a pro-Japanese and had a distorted life and ideology, found it difficult to fully accept and describe Ahn, Chang-ho the way he is, the national independence movement leader who devoted himself to the historical demand of the time.
