해방 직후라고 하는 어려운 환경 속에서 지방도시인 광주에 민중의 힘으로 조선대학교라는 사립대학이 설립된 것은 매우 이례적인 일이며, 특히 이 과정에서 72,000여 지역민이 자발적으로 참여하였다는 사실은 세계의 대학 설립 역사상 초유의 일이다. 중요한 것은 이처럼 특정 독지가나 종교단체의 주도가 아닌 지역민이 참여하는 과정에서 그 주도적 역할을 수행한 사람이 누구인가 하는 것이다. 지금까지는 박철웅(朴哲雄)과 서민호(徐珉濠) 두 사람 가운데 한 명이 주도한 것으로 알려지고 있지만, 그에 대해서는 상반된 견해가 존재하며 그 정확한 규명은 앞으로도 계속 되어야 할 과제이다. 이 논문은 이러한 상황 하에서 대학이 설립된 이후 대학운영에서 철저하게 배재되고, 역사 기술에서도 그 흔적이 말살되어온 서민호의 역할을 재조명하고, 1988년 1·8항쟁을 계기로 민주화된 조선대학교에서 그의 업적을 어떻게 현창할 것인가에 대해 고찰함으로써 조선대학교의 정통성을 확립하고, 구성원 및 지역민들의 역사의식을 정립하려는데 목적이 있다.

A private university named Chosun College was established by the common people of Gwangju under the difficult situation of the liberation period, which is very unusual. In particular, it is extraordinary in the world university establishment history that 72,000 community people voluntarily participated in the establishment. What is important is who was a leader in encouraging the community people to participate in the establishment of the university. So far it has been known that one of Park Chol-Ung and Seo, Min-Ho led the project, but there is an opposite opinion on it and it should be definitely investigated. This study aims to review the role of Seo, Min-Ho who was thoroughly excluded from university management and history and investigate his achievements in Chosun University that has been democratized since the Jan. 8 Struggle in 1988 in order to establish legitimacy of Chosun University and inspire historical consciousness into university members and community people.
