본 연구는 이제까지 문학교육에서 가사 제재의 선정이 어떠한 차원에서 이루어져 왔는지를 분석하여 이에 대한 문제점을 밝혀낸 후, 가사의 갈래적 특징과 최근 교육과정의 흐름을 반영하여 새로운 기준으로 가사의 교육 제재 선정이 이루어져야 함을 논의하였다. 해방 이후 교육과정은 지속적으로 교육 현장에서 나타나는 문제점들을 반영하고 보완하는 차원에서의 개정이 이루어져 왔다. 하지만 가사 제재는 당시부터 지금까지 변함없이 정극인, 정철의 가사를 비롯하여 사대부 가사를 중심으로 선정되어 왔다. 이러한 가사 제재의 선정은 학습자를 중심으로 한다기보다는 작품 자체의 가치와 내용을 더욱 중시한 것이다. 따라서 가사 제재는 현재의 문학교육에서 점차 설자리를 잃어가고 있다. 이는 가사 갈래가 문학교육에서 가치가 점차 없어지는 것을 의미하는 것이 아니다. 따라서 현재의 이러한 상황은 변해가는 교육의 흐름에 유연하게 반응할 수 있는 방향으로 작품이 선정, 활용되어야 하는 방향으로 가사 갈래의 활용이 이루어져야 하는 것이다. 물론 이러한 제재의 선정은 가사 갈래의 본질적인 특성을 충분히 반영한 것이어야 한다. 본고에서 주목한 가사의 갈래적 특징은 개방성, 소통성, 복합성의 측면이다. 이러한 가사의 갈래적 특징들은 결국 문학교육에서 가사갈래가 더욱 다양한 차원에서 활용이 가능하다는 점을 확인시켜 주는 것이다. 이러한 갈래적 특징과 학습자 중심의 교육과정을 고려하여 본고에서는 학습자의 흥미를 끌 수 있는 것, 학습자의 생활이나 의식과 밀접한 관련성을 가지는 것을 중심으로 가사 제재 선정 기준에 대해 논의하였다. 이러한 기준에 따라 서민가사나 규방가사 가운데 오히려 학습자에 밀착된 제재를 확인하였다. 본고는 이러한 제재 선정을 통해 또 다른 정전을 만들어내고자 하는 것이 아니라 교육의 중심에 학습자를 두고, 이를 고려한 제재의 선정이 이루어져야 한다는 점을 밝히고자 한 것이다.

This study focused on the problems in the selection standard for educational materials in the Gasa(歌辭) genre, and discussed a new selection standard to reflect the characteristics of the gasa genre and the latest education curriculum. The education curriculum has been continuously revised to compensate for the problems of education. However, materials on gasa were about the gentry, for example, Jeong Guk-in and Jeong Chel’s works. This selection considers the merits and characteristics of literary works, but not the characteristics of learners. Educational materials on gasa thus underutilized the space allocated to them in the curriculum. The characteristics of learners should also be considered when selecting educational materials in the gasa genre. Of course, these educational materials must also reflect the essential characteristics of the gasa genre. This discussion considers three essential characteristics of the gasa genre―accessibility, openness, and compositeness. These characteristics are reflected in various practices in literature education. This discussion suggests a selection standard for educational materials: content that learners will be interested in, will influence the learner’s life, and will be of value in literature. Gasa about common people and the gentry are both of value in educational practice. This new selection standard for educational materials is not about creating a new canon, but only about including the characteristics of learners.
