작가론의 차원에서 백신애의 행적과 작품연구는 충분히 밝혀지지 않은 미지의 영역이 많다. 자료의 부족 때문이기도 하지만, 여성작가의 작품세계를 ‘작가적 정체성’이라는 종합적 시야를 통해 해석하지 않고 문학사에서 배치된 자리에 국한시켜온 관행 때문이기도 하다. 이 연구는 「꺼래이」를 비롯 개작의 과정을 거친 4편의 작품을 집중적으로 검토함으로써 백신애의 ‘작가로서의 정체성’을 재구해 보고자 했다. 개작의 과정을 거친 작품은 「꺼래이」, 「채색교」, 「식인」, 「적빈」의 4편이다. 개작은 여성 주체의 시각을 작품 속에 더 선명히 기입하고 이들 여성 주체가 소설의 주제 구현에 적극적으로 작용하게 하는 방식으로 이루어졌다. 「꺼래이」는 지식인 여성 주체인 ‘나’를 주요 인물로 한 1인칭 소설에서 시베리아를 방랑하는 조선인 유민 ‘순이’를 주요 인물로 한 3인칭 소설로 개작되었다. 이를 통해 사회주의자 지식인 여성 ‘나’의 자기성찰과 현실발견, 타자에 접속하고 연대하는 전달자로서의 작가의식의 정립과정을 알 수 있다. 「식인」과 「적빈」의 개작된 결말에서 알 수 있다시피 개작의 과정은 극빈과 폭력의 일상적 시간을 정지시키고 비참한 현실에 처한 여성들의 존재 자체에 주목하는 ‘에피퍼니’의 미학적 효과를 창출한다.

Baek Sin-Ae’s views and her works have not been examined enough from the perspective of a writer. It is partly because of a lack of resources and party because of the tradition of confining female writers into a designated subordinate position in literature, without comprehensively critiquing their works or examining the female writer’s identity. This dissertation attempts to reconsider the identity of Baek Sin-Ae as a writer. examining her four revised texts: GGeoraei (「꺼래이」), Colored Bridge (「채색교」), Eating Matters (「식인(食因」), and Abject Poverty (「적빈」). These revised texts highlight the perspectives of female protagonists who play active roles in the realization of the theme of the text. In the revised endings of Eating Matters and Abject Poverty, emphasis is shifted from everyday poverty and violence and to the aesthetic effect of "epiphany," focusing on the existence of miserable women. Meanwhile, GGeoraei, originally a first-person novel whose main protagonist is an intellectual woman, is revised into a third-person novel whose protagonist is a drifting person named "Soon-i" in Siberia. Through this revision, this text reveals the self-reflection of a socialist intellectual woman and the writer’s consciousness as a messenger who connects and shows solidarity with others.
