본 연구는 근대 계몽기 한국어 학습서인 『日韓通話』의 한국어 교재로서의 가치와 특징을 검토하는 데에 목적이 있다. 『日韓通話』는 근대 계몽기 시기의 신식의 회화서이자 근대 계몽기를 대표할 만한 한국어 교재이므로 연구의 가치가 있다. 『日韓通話』에는 실생활과 밀접한 주제로 단원이 구성되어 있으며 실제 회화에서 사용되는 빈도 높은 어휘와 실제성을 지닌 예문이 다수 수록되어 있다. 우선 주제 어휘격인 單語에서는 한자어와 고유어의 비중이 비슷하게 나타났으며, 이때 주제 어휘의 어종과 주제의 난이도는 밀접히 관련되어 있는 것으로 보인다. 다음으로 예시 문장격인 連語에서는 문장종결법의 경우는 평서형 어미와 명령형 어미가 다수 출현하였고, 청자경어법의 경우는 하오체가 빈도 높게 나타났다. 『日韓通話』는 다양한 문장종결법과 청자경어법 어미를 예시 문장으로 제시하여 문장종결법과 청자경어법 체계가 복잡한 한국어의 특징을 보여줌과 동시에 학습자로 하여금 화계에 맞는 한국어를 구사하도록 유도하고 있다.

This paper’s aim is to examine the characteristics and value of Nit-Kan-Tsu-Wa (1905), a Korean language textbook written by a Japanese author and published in the early modern period. Structurally, Nit-Kan-Tsu-Wa is composed of a preface, 25 chapters, and an appendix. Each chapter shares the same structural pattern: vocabulary followed by sentences. In terms of content, it is composed of subject matter closely related to real life situations, and it contains many example sentences with frequently used vocabulary actually used in conversation. The example sentences provide a wide variety of sentence-final endings and addressee-honorifics, so Korean language learners are able to be exposed to the complex characteristics of the Korean language and at the same time discover how the language is used in various situations. This detailed examination of Nit-Kan-Tsu-Wa, when compared with textbooks from previous periods, shows how Korean language textbooks transformed over time and were taken a step further with new structures, systems. and content.
