쇼쿄쿠사이 덴카쓰(松旭齋天勝)는 메이지(明治) 후기부터 쇼와(昭和) 초기까지 ‘마술의 여왕’이라 불리며 한 시대를 풍미한 일본의 국민적인 마돈나였다. 1911년(메이지44), 조선 공연을 기획하여 마술공연으로는 처음으로 고종과 순종의 어람을 받고 4년 뒤 조선 총독부가 주최한 시정 5년 기념 조선물산공진회에는 일본 공연단 중 유일하게 초빙을 받았다. 덴카쓰 극단의 활동은 조선의 공연예술문화에도 큰 영향을 끼쳤다고 할 수 있지만 덴카쓰 극단의 활동 내용은 물론이고 덴카쓰라는 인물의 실체에 관해서도 정확한 자료를 찾기 어려운 실정이다. 이에 본고에서는 먼저 덴카쓰에 대해 보다 정확한 기초 사실 자료를 제공하고 전기적인 사실을 연대기적으로 구성해보려고 노력했다. 1915년(다이쇼4)부터 1926(다이쇼15)년까지의 『경성일보』 기사를 분석하여 다섯 번에 걸친 덴카쓰의 조선공연 내용을 시대별로 정리하여 그 행적을 따라가 보았다. 공연 양상을 규명함에 있어서는 많은 과제가 남지만 덴카쓰 극단이 이와야 사자나미와 구루시마 다케히코, 도기 뎃테키의 지도하에 ‘마술을 가미한 아동연극’ 이라는 새로운 지평을 열며 아동문화활동에 관여했다는 사실을 처음으로 밝혀냈다는데 의의를 두고 싶다. 또한 조선 총독부가 마술 공연을 식민지 통치 정책에 적극적으로 활용했음을 확인했으며 덴카쓰가 이왕직 차관의 부탁을 받아 ‘내선융합’에 일조하는 의미에서 배구자(輩龜子)를 극단에 입단시킨 사실도 확인할 수 있었다. 덴카쓰 극단을 무단 탈퇴하여 조선에 돌아와 펼친 배구자의 극단 활동은 한국 연극의 양식적 확장에 기여했다는 평가를 받는다. 그 활동의 모태가 된덴카쓰 극단에 관한 연구의 첫걸음으로서도 본고의 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

Shokyokusai Tenkatsu was a Japanese national Madonna, known as the "Magic Queen" from the late Meiji era until the early Showa period. However, no research has been conductedon Tenkatsu up until now. Uncovering data related to Tenkatsu Theater required a significant amount of work and discovering accurate information about Tenkatsu as a person was even more difficult. Hence, I have attempted to provide some basic detailed documents on Tenkatsu in this article. I also investigated the “Kyungsung Daily” article and revealed the contents of five of Tenkatsu’s performances in Chosun. For the first time, this article clarified the fact that the Tenkatsu theater contributed directly to the popularization of children’s culture through a new genre called “Children’s play with magic” under the guidance of IwayaSazanami and KurushimaTakehiko. Subsequently, it was confirmed that the Chosun Dynasty had made active use of the magic performance under the colonial governance policy. Lastly, in order for Tenkatsu to adopt the policy of “Inner Together” (the slogan to unify Korea with Japan), it was tentatively confirmed that the Chosun girl Bae Gu-ja had joined the Tenkatsu Theater.
