「호남의사열전」은 기우만이 저술한 의병열전이다. 기우만은 1846년 장성에서 태어나 1916년에 죽었다. 처음으로 호남 의병을 일으켰고 부정척사를 주장하며 항일적 행동을 견지했다. 1896년부터 1909년경까지 호남에서 의병으로 활약했던 12명의 전기를 서술하여 후대에 전하는 일을 자신의 책무로 여겼다. 열전은 3부로 구성되었다. 제1부분은 8명의 행적, 제2부분은 논찬, 제3부분은 4명의 행적이 실렸다. 1부에는 기삼연, 김용구, 김봉규, 박경래, 김준, 전수용, 김영엽, 김익중, 2부에는 논찬, 3부에는 김치곤, 박영건, 정원숙, 성경수 등이 있다. 그는 의병을 민중의 삶을 안정시키고 민중과 결속하는 자, 의병간의 신의를 지키는 자, 조선에 대한 절의 및 항일 의지 실천하는 자, 의병들을 돕는 자 등으로 형상화했다. 이에 그는 의병들은 민중을 보호하고 의병들 간의 결속을 강화하며 본래부터 올바르고 불의에 분노하는 정신을 내면화해야한다는 의병 인식을 드러냈다. 이는 의병인식, 의병 전기 서술, 의병 역사 등을 다룰 때 무력 투쟁, 전투 성과와 연계하는 경향을 재고하게 하는 의의가 있다.

「Honam Ouisa Yeol Jeon」 is a collection of biographies on patriotic soldiers by Ki, Woo-Man(1846-1916). In 1896, he raised an army in the cause of national defense in Jangsung, but it was dismissed. He wrote 「Honam Ouisa Yeol Jeon」 in which achievements of patriotic soldiers in Honam were recorded for future generations. In the 「Honam Ouisa Yeol Jeon」, he characterized the patriotic soldiers as follows: protecting civilians, resisting against Japan based on fidelity to their country, being faithful to other soldiers and protecting each other, and fighting injustices with a righteous spirit. His thoughts had an effect on the awareness of the generations that followed. That is, this study suggests that his consciousness on patriotic soldiers and his narrative style present problems to description of biographies on patriotic soldiers focusing on fighting power and results.
