The study aims to analyze aspects of representation and its implications in the writings of Jang Hyeok-ju(張赫宙).
Jang was encouraged and instructed on Gyeongju(慶州) by Osaka Kintaro(大坂金太郞), the principal of Gyeongju public school who was also influenced by the Japanese in Gyeongju. The effects are shaped in the autobiographical novels, The Age of Inwang-dong and The Lonely Soul. In the two novels, Gyeongju is a place in which negative pre-modern experiences of early childhood and positive modern experiences coexist. Japanese settlers in colonial Korea are also portrayed in The Lonely Soul as supporters who save the main character from a life of deprivation.
Jang’s writings reveal his disgust for the Joseon Dynasty and its pre-modern, antiquated customs and Colonial Korea, which followed the costoms. These are associated with the affection and admiration of the Silla Dynasty, which had its capital city in Gyeongju.
