D. H. 로렌스는 20세기 영국모더니즘 작가들 중에서도 매우 감각적인 문체를 구사했던 작가였다. 그동안 많은 비평가들이 로렌스의 중기 대표작인 『무지개』를 소설의 감각적인 문체와 ‘타자성’이나 ‘미지의 세계’라는 키워드를 연결하여 해석해왔다. 19세기 중반부터 20세기 초반까지 3세대에 걸친 브랭윈(Brangwen) 가족의 삶을 다루는 소설에 대한 비평의 초점은 대부분 세대에 따라 변해가는 남녀관계의 성격에 대한 역사적 고찰이었다. 본 논문은 남녀관계에 대한 비평적 관심을 ‘우주-자연-인간의 연속체’라는 관점으로 이동시킴으로써 소설의 인물이 하나의 생명체로서 어떻게 다루어지고 형상화되는지 살펴 볼 것이다. 이러한 관점은 로렌스가 인간과 우주의 살아있는 관계를 회복하는 것이 왜 예술의 책무라고 주장했는지, 또한 “피의 친교”(blood intimacy)로 압축되는 특유의 감각적 세계가 어떻게 필연적으로 ‘무한’의 초월적 세계와 연결되어 있는지 설명해줄 수 있을 것이다. 논문의 3부에서 본격적으로 『무지개』를 읽기 전에 로렌스의 작품 전반에서 ‘생명’과 ‘종교’의 의미가 어떻게 사용되고 있는지 그의 산문들을 통해 살피는 일은 그의 소설에서 ‘연속체’의 의미를 이해하기 위한 하나의 사전작업이다. 『무지개』는 서구문명의 토대인 성경을 ‘다시쓰기’ 한다는 의미에서 매우 종교적인 색체가 강한데, 로렌스적 의미의 ‘종교’란 기존의 기독교 교리와 매우 다르며, 오히려 모든 생명체들의 ‘살아있는’ 관계 속에서 이해할 수 있다. 또한 이러한 관점은 그의 소설이 오늘날 ‘심층 생태학’의 문제의식과 어떻게 만나고 있는지도 드러나게 해줄 것이다.
D. H. Lawrence is well known for his sensuous style even among the English modernist writers. Many critics have read Lawrence’s attempt to evoke the sensuous world in The Rainbow in terms of ‘otherness’ or ‘the unknown world.’ They have mainly focused on the historical aspects of the relationships between man and woman in the novel. This essay tries to move the focal point of reading the novel from the analysis of those relationships to the perspective of the universe-nature-man continuum. This perspective enables us to see why Lawrence emphasizes “[t]he business of art is to reveal the relation between man and his circumambient universe, at the living moment,” and how the sensuous world in his novel often called by “blood intimacy” necessarily leads to the infinite world of the universe. To understand The Rainbow in light of the universe-nature-man continuum demands the close reading of Lawrence’s essays which deal with his ideas of life and religion. The Rainbow strongly features religious elements in that it is a ‘rewriting’ of the Bible. What is noteworthy is that the religious, for Lawrence, means the living relationship (or continuum) of all living things, rather than the institutionalized Christianity. This view will also reveal how his belief in ‘life’ encounters with the spiritual awareness of ‘deep ecology’ today.
