본 논문은 통일담론에서 공간과 영토에 대한 논의가 결핍되어 있음을 지적하고 이를 보완하기 위하여 관계적 공간론을 통일담론에 접목시키고자 했다. 공간은 사회·기술·자연적 과정들과 분리되어 이를 반영하기만 하는 수동적 무대가 아니라 이러한 과정들과 상호관계적으로 구성된다는 것이 관계적 공간인식의 핵심이다. Doreen Massey에 의하면 이러한 인식은 공간의 내적 다양성 및 다양한 궤적의 공존을 이해하며 공간을 끊임없이 만들어지는 가변적인 것으로 인식한다. 본 연구는 이러한 관계적 공간 인식론을 개성공단에 적용하여 관계적인 방식으로 개성공단을 재해석하는 연구들과 아이디어들을 소개했다. 가령 비판지정학적 접근은 개성공단을 포스트영토주의적인 ‘예외공간’으로 봄으로써 이러한 공간이 생성된 거시적인 원인을 규명하는 데에 유용한 논리구조를 제시한다. 한편, 행위자-네트워크 이론은 개성공단을 구성하는 다양한 인간-비인간 행위자들의 작동과 이들의 동맹을 다양한 측면에서 조망하게 해 준다는 분석적 유용성을 제시했다.

The paper attempts to incorporate relational thinking of space into the discourses of (re)unification in South Korea arguing they lack the notion of territoriality in the proposition and imagination of the unified state. The approach sees space as constructed in relation with social, technical and material processes rather than being separate from or passively representing them. Doreen Massey argues this understanding allows us to understand multiplicity or co-existence of multiple trajectories embedded in space. The paper introduces the case of the Kaesong Industrial Complex (KIC) and the ideas and studies that re-interpretate it relationally. Critical geopolitical approach, viewing it as ‘space of exception’ from the perspective of post-territoriality, provides a critical logic that reveals broad processes behind the production of such space. Actor-network theory, on the other hand, provides analytical advantages allowing us to understand from various perspectives the associations between human and non-human actors that compose all together the KIC.
