김동인은 『창조』에 <약한者의슬픔>, <마음이여튼者> 등을 연재하며 문학활동을 시작했다. 이들 소설에서 과거시제와 3인칭대명사를 처음으로 사용했다고 했는데, 그것은 일원묘사라는 서술방식에 의해 가능하게 된 것이었다. 일원묘사는 작중인물의 눈과 입을 빌린 서술방식으로 일본의 소설가이자 평론가인 이와노 호메이(岩野泡鳴)의 주장을 연원으로 한다. 일원묘사는 작중인물의 인식을 매개로 진행된다는 점에서 인물시각적 서술방식이라고 할 수 있다. 작중 인물을 통해 소설이 직접 독자들에게 전달되자 이야기 속의 사건은 직접성의 외관으로 위장하고 나타나지만 소거된 화자는 여전히 특권적인 위치에서 은밀하게 작중인물을 지배한다. 인물시각적 서술방식은 작중인물의 의식에 비중을 두는 또 하나의 경향으로 전개되었는데, 그것은 근대소설의 양식적 질서, 나아가 그 근간에 위치한 근대 이성에 대한 회의의 움직임과 맞물려 있었다. 김동인이 <약한者의슬픔>, <마음이여튼者여> 등의 소설을 쓰면서 느꼈던 곤혹스러움 역시 서술방식과 관련되어 있지만 그것이 의식을 다룬 서술방식의 온전한 의미를 획득했음을 뜻하는 것은 아니다. <약한者의슬픔>이나 <마음이여튼者여>의 대부분을 메우고 있는 것은 같은 궤적만을 왕복하는 내면의 진자운동이라는 점은 이와 관련되어 있다. 작중인물의 내면적 갈등이 지니는 이지러짐에는 사회나 문학 장과 유리된 동인지 방식 역시 일정하게 작용하고 있었다. 이와노 호메이가 일원묘사론을 주장한 것 역시 당시 일본 소설의 중심에 위치했던 사소설이라는 양식에 적절한 서술방식이라는 점에서였다.
In this paper, I tried to examine the relation between the Unitary description and the way of literary coterie magazine in modern novels of Korea. < The Sorrow of the Weak(약한者의슬픔) >, < The Weakhearted person(마음이여튼者) > were presented in 『Creation(창조)』 by Kim, Dong-In. The past tense and the third personal pronoun was first appeared in these novels and that was involved in the Unitary description. Kim, Dong-In had a experience of dropping off at a contribution contest at then. Iwano Homei(岩野泡鳴) who is japanese novelist and literary critic asserted the Unitary description. The Unitary description is the method of description of person’s viewpoint because novel goes along with regard to person’s cognition. By Using the Unitary description, story could be cut and arranged, and narrator was disappeared and story was appeared directly. In this way, being plausible was created in novel. The method of description of person’s viewpoint unfolded the trend that described person’s consciousness vividly. And that was related to skepticism of the Modern Novel’s stylistic order. Iwano Homei asserted the Unitary description because it matched the japanese autobiographical novel suitably. The same covert conflict made an appearance in these two novels because the way of literary coterie magazine was isolated from the world and literature field.
