This study attempts to examine the ways in which the graphic novel creates various meanings by merging image and language and their complimenting one another. The graphic novels analyzed are Unastoria (Astory) and La terra dei figli (Land of the Sons) by Gipi (pseudonym of Gian Alfonso Pacinotti). The graphic novel as a new form of intermedial narrative is generally a book-length work in the medium of comics that deals with mainly serious literary themes transcending the boundaries of customary novel and comics. We try to explain how the intermediality of the graphic novels is manifested, considering the relationship between graphic image and verbal text. Gipi’s graphic novels delve into the desires, anxieties, and effeminacy of modern people and criticize the absence of communication by way of internet and social media. Unastoria reveals the feeble aspects of human nature by narrating the three generations who are never communicating each other and sharing emotions, and who are only looking in different directions. While Unastoria uses watercolor technique and poetic language, La terra dei figli applies hatching in order to represent a post-atomic world. The latter graphic novel consists of line drawings and minimal text, which express primitivity and cruelty abstractly and make readers be immersed in the lives of the protagonists. Gipi’s graphic novels show intermedial effects that one medium cannot afford to provide without another medium.
