This paper focuses on memory, forgetfulness, which has a significant meaning in Bassani’s works 『The Gold Rimmed Glasses』. This novel in which the first persone recalls a homosexual otolaryngologist Athos Fadigati. The narrator plays a key role in explaining how memory develops the story.This novel was based on the Province of Ferrara, the period of WW II, and the first person who represented the writer himself. The writer delivers his experience through the first person’s memory based on isolation, discrimination, and alienation. Exclusion from the community led to different identities between a person and the society. The narrator sometimes did not recall the past, which was replaced with other people’s memory. That means same events could be translated with different point of views. Bassani ultimately tried to say that Jewish people were victimized because of wrong perceptions in the divided point of views. Throughout the story, the author reveals his historical values, the role of writers, and, finally, what readers should keep in mind toward historical events. His intention can be easily found on Jewish characters, that is, an alienated group. Exclusion from the community led to different identities between a person and the society.
