본 논문에서는 대학생들이 다문화가정 자녀 관련 법적 제도 및 정책에 대하여 어떻게 인식하고 있으며 인식 형성에 매체가 어떠한 역할을 하는지 알아보고자 한다. 서울과 충청권에 있는 13명의 대학생들을 대상으로 다문화가정 자녀들에 대한 인식, 이들과 관련된 제도 및 정책들에 대한 의견, 인식 형성에 있어 매체의 영향 및 다문화공존에 대한 생각들 및 방향성을 소그룹 인터뷰(FGI)를 사용하여 진행하였다. 인터뷰 결과 다문화가정자녀들과 동시대에 살며 경쟁상대, 또래 집단으로 성장하고 있는 대학생들의 다문화가정 자녀들에 대한 인식은 상당부분 매체에 의한 영향으로 나타났으며 이에 따라 다문화가족 및 다문화가정 자녀들을 사회의 약자, 시혜의 대상으로 인식하는 것으로 나타났다. 이들은 다문화가족과 다문화가정 자녀를 동일시하였으며 다문화가정 자녀들은 한국에서 한국인으로 태어났기 때문에 법적인 권한이나 의무에 있어서 특별한 혜택 없이 선주민 자녀들과 동등한 대우를 받아야 한다고 하였다. 하지만 자신들과 “다름”에 의해 사회에서 주변화 되는 현상을 막기 위해 다양성이 존중되는 사회로 거듭나는 것이 시급하며 그 해결책의 일환으로 ‘사이문화’ 정책을 제안하였다.

The current study examine ways in which native Korean college students perceive multicultural children, their legal rights, and government policies that effect them. Specifically, by conducting focus group interviews with 13 college students in Seoul and Chungcheong province, the study asked participants how they perceive multicultural children, policy and legal rights of multicultural children, and what they make meaning of Korea as a multicultural society. The findings show that college students have divided perception on multicultural children. They were found to perceive multicultural children socially marginalized minority and object of compassion because of the ways media has framed multicultural families, yet, at the same time, they were found to perceive them as their competitors because of competitive job market. In terms of perception on policy and legal rights, the participants believed that the multicultural children should have the same legal rights as Korean native children; equal responsibilities and benefits, no less and no more. In order to prevent multicultural children from becoming perpetual minority in Korea, participants suggested “in-between culture”, a combination of salad-bowl and melting-pot approach, which respects individual uniqueness and diversity.
