본 연구는 한국거주 내국민과 미국거주 해외동포의 민족정체성, 다문화수용성, 그리고 통일의 식의 수준을 비교한다. 구체적으로는 두 집단의 민족정체성이 다문화수용성과 통일의식에 미치는 영향력을 분석하고 또한 민족정체성과 통일의식 간의 관계에서 다문화수용성의 매개효과를 실증적으로 검증하는데 목적이 있다. 최종분석에 활용한 사례 수는 한국거주 내국민 195명과 미국거주 해외동포 177명으로 총 372명이다. 본 연구의 주요 분석결과를 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국거주 내국민과 미국거주 해외동포들이 지각한 민족정체성은 다문화수용성과 통일의식에 정적 영향을 미쳤으며, 둘째, 한국거주 내국민들의 경우 자문화지향성이 민족정체성과 통일의식 간의 관계를 부분 매개하였으며, 미국거주 해외동포의 경우 다문화지향성이 민족정체성과 통일의식 간의 관계를 부분 매개하였다. 셋째, 두 집단 간의 평균을 비교하였을 때, 민족정체성에 있어서 미국거주 해외동포는 내국민 보다 높은 민족정체성 수준을 보였다. 다문화수용성에 있어서 한국거주 내국민의 경우 다문화지향성과 자문화지향성이 비슷한 수준이었으나, 미국거주 해외동포의 경우 다문화지향성이 높게 나타났다. 또한 이들의 다문화지향성은 한국거주 내국민 보다 높았으며, 자문화지향성은 유의미하게 낮게 나타났다. 통일의식에 있어서 두 집단의 차이는 유의미하지 않았다. 본 연구를 통해 통일의식에 대한 민족정체성과 다문화수용성의 영향을 확인하였으며, 무엇보다 양자 간의 관계에서 다문화수용성의 중요성을 실증적으로 확인하였다.

The purposes of this study are to compare ethnic identity, multicultural acceptability, and awareness of national unification for the two population groups: South Koreans(Group 1, G1) and Korean Americans in the United States(Group 2, G2), and to verify the mediating effects of multicultural acceptability in the relationship between ethnic identity and awareness of national unification. We found several significant results. First, G2 was significantly higher than G1 in the mean values of the total of ethnic identity. Furthermore, G2 had significantly stronger exploration whereas Group 2 had weaker exploration. Second, G2 had significantly higher multicultural attitude and lower ethnocentric attitude than G1 in the mean value of multicultural acceptability. However, there was not significant difference in the mean value of the awareness of national unification between G1 and G2. Third, ethnic identity had positive effects on multicultural acceptability and awareness of national unification for both groups. Finally, we found differential mediating effects of multicultural acceptability in the relationship between ethnic identity and awareness of national unification. Ethnocentric attitude played a partial mediating role in the G1, but multicultural attitude played a partial mediating role in the G2.
