본 연구는 구비설화를 대상으로 주체로서 노인이 표출하는 욕망 양상을 살펴 노인.주체 설화의 의미 지향을 읽어내고자 했다. 구비 설화에는 이야기 속 노인 인물의 욕망과 이를 바라보고 평가하며 수용하는 구연자(향유자)의 욕망이 공존한다. 본고는 향유자의 욕망이 부각되는 ‘원초적 욕망 표현’(12편), ‘경험과 지혜 추구’(15편), ‘물질적 성공과 출세’(13편) 유형과 설화 인물의 욕망이 드러나는 ‘생존과 연명’(23편), ‘관계 형성과 유지’(29편) 유형으로 노인 주체 설화를 분류했다. 노년의 향유자들은 과거에 고착되거나 경험을 제대로 활용하지 못하는 이야기 속 인물의 모습을 반성적으로 수용했으며, 삶의 과정을 객관적으로 돌아보고 반성을 실천하는 태도에 공감하고 지지를 보냈다. 또한 이들은 노인 주체의 경험과 지혜가 자신과 가족, 가문과 이웃을 지켰다는 사실에 감동하고 이를 지지하는 태도를 보였으며, 재물에 대한 편협한 욕망에서 벗어나 물질과 부에 대한 새로운 성찰을 제공했다. 설화 속 노인 주체는 생존 자체보다 삶에 대한 깨달음이나 죽음과 내세에 대한 인식을 드러냈다. 노인.주체 설화에서 관계적 욕망에 관한 설화가 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는데, 가족을 위하고 가족 구성원의 배려를 받고자 하는 노인.주체의 욕망이 절실하게 드러난다. 노인은 설화 속에서 자신이 주체가 되는 경험을 통해 스스로를 성찰하고 성장하며 진정한 삶을 누리게 된다고 보았다. 이러한 점에서 노인-주체 설화는 노인의 성장담이며 노인-주체 설화 구연자에게는 이 이야기가 치유담으로 작용한다고 할 만하다.

This study examined the aspects of the desire of the elderly as the subject in the folktales, and discovered the meaning of the elderly subject narrative. In the folktales, it coexists that the character's desire and storyteller's desire who evaluate and accommodates the character's desire. I classified the stories to 'primal desire expression'(12 pieces), 'pursuit of experience and wisdom'(15 pieces), 'material success and career'(13 pieces), 'survival and prolongation of life'(23 pieces), and 'formation of relationship and maintenance'(29 pieces). The elderly who enjoy the folktales have accepted as reflective the look of the characters in the story who adhere to the past or does not take advantage of the experience properly, and have empathy and support the attitude that have their own life back reflection. In addition, They were impressed and support in the truth that the experience and wisdom of the elderly subject kept themselves and their families, neighbors. Also they are out of the narrow.minded desire for wealth and have provided a new reflection on the wealth, and they thought that the awakening to life is more important than survival itself. There are many narratives about the desire to have a relationship in the elderly subject folktales, it means that there is their own family in the elderly’s mind, and the elderly are desperate for the care of a family member. The elderly subjects have the experience of being the subject of themselves in the elderly subject stories, and through it all, they were able to do a reflection and grow up. In this respect, the elderly subject folktales are the story about the growth in the elderly and also about the healing to the storytellers.
