본 논문은 <여우누이> 설화에서 주인공 ‘여우누이’가 어떻게 형상화되며 그에 따른 전승 의미는 어떻게 형성되는지 살핀 연구이다. 우선, 기녀치성 등 출생 과정에서 나타나는 여우의 초월적 영향력이 여우누이의 행위, 조력자와의 대결에까지 영향을 미치는 점을 논하였다. 여우누이는 출생, 가축 살해 등을 통해 초월적 능력의 소유자로 형상화되며, 그의 실제 적수는 오빠가 아니라 초월적 능력을 지닌 조력자가 된다. 이에 따라 작품 내 실질적 대결 구도는 ‘여우누이 대 조력자’로 형성되고, 이는 인간보다 뛰어난 존재 간의 대결이 된다. 논의의 초점을 조력자와 여우누이의 대립 구도로 모은 후, 다수의 전승에서 조력자가 오빠의 아내로 나타나는 점에 주목하여 가족 내 맥락에서 여우누이와 조력자가 어떻게 인식되는지를 논의하였다. ‘여성에 대한 인식이 긍정적/부정적이다’를 가늠하기보다는, 이들에게 기대될 법한 가족 내 역할과 실제 행동, 그리고 전승집단의 특성에 따라 전승 의미도 달라질 수 있다는 점을 살펴보았다. <오누이 힘내기> 설화의 전승인식과 비교해 볼 때, <여우누이>에는 딸을 무조건 배척하기보다는 안정적인 가족과 집안에 해를 끼치는 딸을 경계하는 인식이 비교적 뚜렷이 나타난다. 이에 ‘여우 같은 딸’이라는 표현이 텍스트 내적으로는 딸에게서 여우의 초월적 영향력이 계속 발현되어 ‘여우가 딸 되는’ 과정을 나타낼 수 있으나, 외적으로는 딸을 여우에 빗대어 ‘여우같은 딸’이 지니고 있을 속성을 처음부터 환기시키는 표지가 될 수 있다. 이를 통해 ‘여우가 딸 되는’ 형상화 과정뿐만 아니라 딸을 여우로 인식하는, 곧 ‘딸이 여우되는’ 인식과정 두 가지를 상정할 수 있다.

This article aims to study how the “fox sister” in the “Fox Sister” (여우누이) tale is characterized and how the meanings of the tale are formed accordingly. First, I argue that the strong transcendence of fox, related to the parents’ praying for a daughter (especially ‘a daughter like a fox’) influences on the transcendent power of the “fox sister” and battles with the supporter afterwards. The fox sister and supporter are both described as transcendent beings, and their battle becomes a substantive confrontation in the tale. After discussing the confrontation between the powerful “fox sister” and the supporter, I focus on cases in which the supporter appears as the brother’s wife (the fox sister’s sister-in-law). In these cases, the meanings of various versions are expressed in diverse forms, regarding the characters’ roles and actions in families and the characteristics of transmission groups. In comparison to the “Trial of strength between brother and sister” (오누이 힘내기) tale, transmission groups express stronger wariness toward the daughter, who causes harm to the whole family rather than to the “daughter herself” in the “Fox Sister” tale. Therefore, while “a daughter like a fox” can express the process through which the characteristics of a daughter are consistently influenced by the transcendent fox internally, it can also imply that “the daughter will be like a fox” metaphorically from the beginning when it comes to the real transmission’s side. Through these suggestions, I suggest two-way recognition of the “daughter becoming a fox” and the “fox becoming a daughter.”
