본고는 유명한 서 세람의 신화 <하이누웰레>에 대한 오래된 통설에 반론을 제기하는 스미스의 선행 연구에 기반하여 두 가지 측면에서 <하이누웰레> 신화에 접근하였다. 첫째, 하이누웰레 신화는 수렵 시대에서 농경시대로의 전환기에 농경민의 세계상을 반영하여 형성된 원초적 신화인가, 아니면 상대적으로 후대에 형성된 신화인가를 고찰하였다. 『하이누웰레 신화』에 집록된 서 세람 신화 자료들과의 대비를 통해, <하이누웰레>는 서 세람 신화의 서사적 요소와 신화적 존재론을 바탕으로 형성된 신화일 가능성이 높음을 보였다. 둘째, <하이누웰레> 신화의 주제를 재론하였다. ‘이자(異者)적 외부’이자 내부라 할 수 있는 ‘초월적 외부’와 변별되는, 내부적 질서 ‘밖’에 있는 미지의 ‘외부’에 대한 관념이 <하이누웰레> 신화에 있음을 지적하고, <하이누웰레>는 양면적 속성을 지닌 ‘처녀 하이누웰레’의 살해와 재생을 통해 미지의 외부에 대한 인식을 드러낸 신화 담론이라고 보았다. 특정 지역의 신화 지형에 대한 구체적 논의가 축적될 때 여러 가지 의미있는 비교 고찰이 진행될 수 있다고 보고, 본고에서 미처 다루지 못한 구체적인 비교 과제를 제시하였다.

The Hainuwele, a myth of Ceram island, has been regarded as an old myth on the Dema-deity and farming, based in agricultural era. However, this essay argues that the Hainuwele had been composed from several mythical tales of western Ceram and made into a myth about the outside world. In this essay, several myths, collected from the western Ceram by Jensen and his co-worker, were analyzed, and the Hainuwele was compared with several myths of western Ceram. The remarks on Hainuwele in this essay were performed based on the mythical topography of western Ceram. This essay argues that the important symbols in Hainuwele myth are the maiden, murder and food plant. The maiden represents what has come from outside and is now inside. The mythology of western Ceram accepted and internalized the maiden by murdering her and transforming her into food plant. On the basis of the above argument, this essay suggested some comparative studies on myths based on local mythical topographies.
