예술은 매체의 변화에 가장 극명하게 반응하는 분야이다. 매체의 변화에 따라 예술의 한 갈래가 쇠퇴하기도 하며 동시에 새로운 예술의 갈래가 생성되기도 한다. 문학도 예외가 아니다. 종이의 등장, 인쇄의 보급과 함께 문학은 원시종합예술의 형태와 구비문학이 전부였던 시대에서 벗어나 기록문학이라는 새로운 갈래를 등장시켰다. 사진 기술과 영사 매체의 등장과 함께 연극으로 한정되어 있던 극문학은 영화라는 새로운 예술로 진화한다. 라디오, 텔레비전의 등장에 따라 문자를 해독할 수 있는 일부 계층의 고급 소비재였던 문학은 전면적인 드라마, 토크쇼 등의 형태로 대중화의 시대로 접어든다. 이 시기까지 전통적인 형태의 구비문학은 새로운 문학 형태의 등장으로 위축되고 약화되는 듯이 보였다. 이러한 일련의 변화 과정에 대해 옹(Walter J. Ong)은 구비문학의 약화를 구술성의 소멸 현상으로 분석한다. 그는 문자성이 구술성을 소멸시키는 현상이 필연적인 것으로 인식한 것이다. 그러나 20세기 말 보급된 전혀 새로운 매체인 인터넷의 등장은 구비문학의 새로운 가능성을 열었고 옹의 구술성 소멸에 관한 논지는 다양한 측면에서 반박되고 있다. 잭 구디(Jack Goody)는 문자체계가 구술성에 반영구적 형식을 부여함으로서 구술성의 영역이 더 넓어지는 것으로 보고 있다. 다만 본고에서는 인터넷 매체 이전 단계인 전파매체의 시대까지 구술성 소멸로 인한 구비문학의 역동성 감소의 측면까지만을 고찰해 보고자 한다.
Art is the most appreciated response field to changes of the media. Changes in the media, a branch of the decline of art and at the same time also often generates a new branch of art. Literature is no exception. New branches of literature has appeared with the appearance of the paper, spread of printing, literature escaped from the age of the primitive art and oral literature. Drama has evolved to the movie with the emergence of picture technology and projected media, escaped the theater. Literature stepped into the era of popular with the emergence of radio and television. Previously it was a luxury consumer goods of the people who can decipher the characters. Traditional forms of oral literature in this period seemed to weaken and atrophy because of the emergence of a new literary form. Walter J Ong was analyzed that this phenomenon is weakening of orality about a series of this process changing. He recognized it as inevitable. However, the Internet has opened up new possibilities of oral literature at the end of the 20th century. As an example, Jack Goody recognizes that the area of orality is wider as writing system give semi-permanent form to orality. However, in this paper, I would like to investigate about reduced dynamics of oral literature due to extinction of orality until electric wave media, previously step of internet media.
