19세기 한국 시가에 대한 한국인의 기록을 접하기는 어렵지 않다. 하지만 같은 시기에 서양인이 한국인의 시가를 어떤 식으로든 기록하고 있다면 이야기가 달라진다. 그러한 시도 자체가 많지 않을 뿐더러 그러한 작업을 살펴보는 것은 그 자체로 의미가 있기 때문이다. 이에 본고에서는 19세기에 서양인이 남긴 한국 시가의 음원, 한국 시가의 악보, 그리고 한국 시가에 대한 논문들을 들어 그 시기 서양인이 바라본 한국 음악에 대해 살펴보았다. 1896년에 미국에서 녹음된 한국인의 음원은 현존하는 한민족 최초의 노래 녹음으로서의 의미를 지닌다. 그리고 비슷한 시기에 이를 손으로 채보한 것도 그 자체로 많은 의미를 지닐 것이다. 즉 한국 음악을 오선보에 기록한다는 한계를 전제하더라도 당시 서양인이 한국음악을 어떻게 듣고 인식했는지를 보여주기 때문이다. 심지어 비슷한 시기에 애나 스미스와 엘리 랜디스는 한국 음악에 대한 논문을 『미국민속학보』에 싣기도 했다. 본고에서는 이러한 자료들을 종합적으로 살펴보면서 19세기 서양인이 바라본 한국 음악에 대해 접근했다. 특히 본고에서는 음원, 악보, 논문에 공통적으로 등장하는 <달아달아>에 주목했다. 이제까지 학계에서는 <달아달아>에 별다른 관심을 두지 않았는데, 본고에서는 <달아달아>의각편 등을 제시하여 그것이 지니는 의미가 ‘효(孝)’와 ‘충(忠)’으로 달라지는 양상을 살펴보았다. 그리고 비교적 오랜 시기에 이은상이 작성한 글을 통해 <달아달아>가 ‘정종의 사친애(思親愛)’를 표현한 노래로 인식되기도 했음을 밝혔다. 요컨대 본고는 19세기 서양인의 기록들-음원·악보·논문-들을 종합해서 그들이 한국음악을 바라보고 인식한 양상을 살펴보고 애나 스미스와 엘리 랜디스의 논문을 들어 <달아달아>의 가사 채록과 분석에서의 차이 등을 제시하였다.

Discovering Korean music created during the nineteenth century is not difficult to find. However, discovering Korean music or Korean folklore that existed in the Western world is rare. Therefore, this paper will examine Westerners’ perceptions of Korean musical folklore that was first recorded via the handwritten musical scores of scholars Anna Tolma Smith and Eli Barr Landis. The first handwritten recording of Korean music in 1896 is considered very meaningful because it is considered one of the most notable writings. We can further understand the Western perception of Korean folklore from these notable writings even with limited scholarly evidence. In addition, the research findings of Anna Tolma Smith and Eli Barr Landis reflected their ideas of Korean musical folklore. Smith and Landis’ research examines the 19th century musical folklore song titled: “Korean Moon:” or the “Rhymes of Korean Children.” The song was one of Smith’s last written recording of Korean folkloric handwritten scores. Smith emphasized the ‘filial devotion(孝)’ within the “Moon song;” on the other hand, Landis’ lyrics showed the cultural ‘loyalty(忠)’ within the song. Finally, this paper introduced Korean scholar’s Yi Eunsang’s point of view. His perspective explained that “Moon song” or the “Rhymes of Korean Children” is written by King Jeong-jo or the King’s maidens.
